Dennis Slater

Dennis Milton Slater died March 15, 2007, at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Salida, Colorado in 1943 to Warren and Ruth Slater. Dennis spent his youth in the Lincoln-Lucas area of Kansas where his family farmed. Dennis served honorably in the US Army and did a tour in Vietnam. After his discharge, he earned a degree in electronics. He lived in Kansas and Iowa before settling in Missouri. He held many jobs, including heavy equipment operator, tool and die maker, and he owned a heating and cooling business, but his two loves were farming and his work as a bush pilot in Alaska. On August 26, 2000, he married his wife Carolynn at their home in Edmundson, Missouri. They traveled extensively and fished across the country, but his favorite fishing area was Cliff Lake in Ontario, Canada. Dennis fished there every year for many years. However, his favorite pastime was probably sitting on his deck with his cherished Twinkle by his side. Dennis is survived by his wife, Carolynn of the home, a son Rolla Horton of Kansas, a daughter JoLinda Slater of Minnesota, two sisters, Beverly Sheets (Don) of Kansas City and Carrie Sharp and a brother Warren Slater, both of Pennsylvania. Five grandchildren, other relatives and many dear friends, especially Liz, Whitney, Callieann and Clark of the home will dearly miss him. Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, a stepfather, Leonard Pinnick, a daughter Kala Walters, six brothers and sisters and his beloved Twinkle. Interment will be private. A memorial service for Dennis will be held at a date announced later. Memorials may be made to the Missouri Humane Society, 1201 Mackland Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63110, or to the St. Louis Senior Dog Project, 7488 Rivermont Trail, House Springs, MO 63051.
