Jack D. Cook
Jack went to heaven peacefully on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 in his home, surrounded by his wife of 61 years Doe, children and grandchildren. He lost his battle with rapidly growing cancer 3 months after his diagnosis. Cremation is planned. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 10:30 am at First Christian Church of Independence, 125 South Pleasant, Independence, Missouri. Visitation with family will be from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the church. Jack was born July 8, 1921 in Kansas City Missouri to Anna J. (Lozier) and Ross Cook. He was married to Dorothy “Doe” Maddox on June 21, 1947. Jack’s folks traveled and he went to many schools. He went into the Army Infantry on October 19, 1942 from Ft. Custer, Michigan. He was First Scout in the 45th Infantry and was out behind enemy lines when he was shot through the legs by a burp-gun and taken Prisoner of War on October 17, 1944. Jack was released on April 23, 1945 from the P.O.W. camp. He weighed approximately 90 lbs when he arrived back in the States. Jack and his wife, Dorothy, have 4 children, Jack D. & Karen Cook of Shreveport, LA – Sandra & Ed Rust of Kansas City, KS – Bruce W. & Cheri Cook of Norton, KS – Jeffrey A. & Lavonna Cook of Topeka, KS. He has 9 grandchildren, Jared, Courtney, Shelly, Jeremy, Mykal, Sheena, Mary Beth, Jacob and Joshua – and 5 great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Sarah, Romen, Kayden and Tyler. Jack was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., D.A.V. and Heart of America Ex-P.O.W. He worked for the Board of Public Utilities in Kansas City, KS for 32 years as an Internal Auditor. He was active in his church. Jack was a Boy Scout leader, a Cub Scout leader, and a sponsor of youth activities at church as his children grew up. He was a very active family man with lots of trips and great fun memories.
