Archie Poynter

Archie E. Poynter, 77, Independence, MO passed away February 6, 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Cremation. Memorial service will be 1:00 pm, Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at Heartland Cremation & Burial Society, Raytown, MO. In lieu of flowers, the familyl suggests contributions to Cancer Action, Inc., 1831 Minnesota Ave, Kansas City, KS or to the American C ancer Society. Archie was born May 20, 1926 in Cotter, AR, the son of William Sherman Poynter and Bertha A.V. Medley, both deceased. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Phyllis Jean Nicholas, of the home; son, Roger Leigh Poynter, Kansas City, MO; half brother, Buddy Ray Poynter, Grand Prairie, TX and half sister, Dorothy Joan McCraken, Independence, MO; two brothers, Gerald and Dewitt, sister, Nathalee and many nieces and nephews. His stepmother, the former Monnie Ann Pace precedes him in death. Archie was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, servicing in the Asiatic Pacific theater where he participated in the Okinawa Campaign and Occupation of Japan. He was assigneed to LST #820 which broke apart and went down in a typhoon shortly before he was discharged in 1946. He was a member of the Naval Reserve until 1954. He retired from GM, Fairfax Plant in 1991 after 41 years of service and was a member of UAW Local 31. Prior to working at GM, he worked at Caterpillar Tractor in Peoria, IL>
