Jean Begley Schmitz was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She left this world unexpectedly on February 27, 2021 at age 74.
Jean was born to Tom and Marie Begley on November 9, 1946 in St. Louis, MO. She loved her childhood growing up on Washington Blvd. in a house full of kids…Ginny, Mike, Kathy, Pat, Maurie, Barb, Bob, Colleen and baby Peggy. Special shopping trips and French onion soup at Famous Barr with her beloved Aunt Sis meant the world to her. Her time working at The Tivoli Theatre and attending St. Mark’s High School shaped her teenage years and provided lots of stories which she shared over the years.
Jean had three kids, Matt, Jeannine and Amy, and was a cherished aunt to a boatload of nieces and nephews. All would agree that Jean’s house was the place to be for roller skating in the basement, dance parties in the family room, cards at the kitchen table and a listening ear and shoulder to cry on whenever needed.
She was Grammy to eight kiddos who adored her: Megan, Jake, Davey, Kenton, Sierra, Ava, Delaney and Matthew. She never saw a fault in them, and they never saw one in her. All eight were on a Zoom call waiting to wish her a Happy 74th Birthday when she finally logged on and said “Sorry guys. Can we do this tomorrow night instead? I’m in the middle of a poker game and I’m on a roll.” The grandkids loved it!
Jean had a huge heart and always put others before herself. She was a proud patriot and had the utmost respect for all who served our country. She loved Motown, the Cardinals (especially Lou Brock), being Irish, and had a sweet tooth beyond compare. And dancing, oh how she loved dancing! No doubt she’s spending her time now jitterbugging with Ginny, Mike and Pat.
Jean meant so much to so many and her memory lives on through all who loved her.
The funeral service will be held on March 6, 2021 at 1:00 pm at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish, 14251 Nall Ave., Leawood, KS. A celebration of her life will be held in St. Louis in Spring 2021.
I love the story of her 74th birthday! That is Jean. She was a wonderful lady who will be missed. Thinking of her children and grandchildren.

My heart breaks for you guys. Your mom was a wonderful neighbor and friend. Her being next door brightened up our lives and for sure my mom’s. Tom’s an my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of grief. I can just see them now, together again, dancing on my parents coffe table to Elvis in their pajamas!
I had the honor of meeting Jean through the homebound ministry at St. Michael the Archangel. She always attended our weekend Communion service at Vintage Park (pre-pandemic). Although I’ve only seen Jean from afar since the pandemic, she was always in my thoughts. I will miss her cheery greeting of, “what’s up kid, sit down, let’s talk.”
Jean was a joy to be around.

Sad day. I just recently found out about her passing. She was so much fun. Loved hanging out with all of you for so many years at the kitchen table. Talking about nothing, and everything late into the evening. Loved your mom. Great person.
