In Defense of Light Verse

Ring out, glad bells! Toll not, sad dirge!
I feel a strong compulsive urge
To decry funereal verse, and substitute
What may be worse.
I’m tired of poems grim and stark,
And bleak and drear and dank and dark.
Let’s have some odes both fey and flimsy,
Laced with merriment and whimsy.
Oh, lease us not lament and grieve,
But bolster up our joie de vivre.
More merry anticsm Ooh-la-la!
Less esoteric brouhaha.
Frankly, as opposed to ghoulish,
I prefera verse that’s foolish.
And, as for Edgar Allen Poe,
To quote that raven, “Never mo!”
