Donald Dowell

Donald M. Dowell, 63, Lee’s Summit, MO passed away April 15th at the home. A Celebration of Life services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, April 21, 2003 at New Summit Presbyterian Church, 1800 NE Independence Ave., Lee’s Summit, MO. Visitation will be 10-11:00 AM at the church & prior to the service. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to American Cancer Society, PO Box 84, Grandview, MO 64030. Don was born August 22, 1939 in Chillicothe, MO to Dr. Donald and Clora Dowell. He graduated from Chillicothe High School and Westminster College. Through ROTC, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army and served as a company commander in the Armour Division at Ft. Knox, KY. He worked for General Motors in both the Cadillac and Parts Divisions for 27 years, winning many national awards and trips. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post No. 21, and was a member of New Summit Presbyterian Church. After retiring from General Motors, Don volunteered many hours at Truman Medical Center in Lakewood and the Veterans Administration Hospital. Don was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Betty Don Ernst. He is survived by his wife, Lois of the home; son, Trey Dowell, Maryland Heights, MO; daughter & son in law, Kristin & Andrew Watkins, Spartanburg, SC; grandson, Samuel Watkins; sister, Pat Nichols, Chillicothe, MO; and ten nieces and nephews and their families. He will be remembered as a person who traveled the world, but was very happy in his own home. He was a tenacious and tough, yet sensitive and caring, a true softy when least expected. He could lighten a tense or uncomfortable moment with a line that would break up a crowd. Don faces his death with dignity and courage and sets an examople for all who were around him during his final days.
