Elmer Vickers

Elmer Elton Vickers, 78, of Independence, MO passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003 at his home. A memorial service, followed by a visitation will be held Saturday, June 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Community of Christ Church, 15006 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Elton was born June 26, 1924 in Donna, TX to Elma and Electa Vickers. He graduated from Donna High School in 1941, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942. He served in WWII in Guam and China. In 1948, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&I. Recalled in 1951 to serve in Korea, he ended his duty with the rank of Major in 1952. He married Ima Stuart of Weslaco, Texas on December 26, 1946. The Vickers family moved to Independence, MO in 1956. He began a career with Blue Valley Federal Savings and Loan from which he would retire as a Senior Vice President in 1988. Elton served on the Public Utilities Advisory Board for the City of Independence, the Board of Salvation Army, the Board of Directors for the Independence Chamber of Commerce, Trustee for the Independence Regional Health Center, and chaired the Selective Service Board No. 76. He was a member of the Inter-City Kiwanis club, and served for 2 years as President, as well as Lt. Governor of Division 2 Missouri/Arkansas of Kiwanis International, and was made a Life Mamber. An Elder in the Community of Christ Church, Elton served on the building committee, the Scholarship Committee, served as Stewardship Commissioner for several years, and sang in the choir. Elton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ima; his son and saughter-in-law, Larry and Gayle Vickers of Blue Springs; his daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and David Cherry of Marietta, Georgia; his daighter and son-in-law, Brenda and Greg Nickle of Independence, Missouri; 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Elton requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his name either to Cancer Action, 13905 E. 39th St., Independence, MO, 64055 or to Northland hospice, 3100 NE 83rd #2300, Kansas City, MO 64119.
