Gary Rosentrater

Gary Lee Rosentrater, 67, of Greeley, CO died unexpectedly, Monday, July 27, 2009, while on a trip to Kansas City, MO with his wife, Donna.

He was born on April 27, 1942 in Greeley, CO to Gus and Helen (Smith) Rosentrater. Gary contracted polio when only a boy that left him with different size feet and a great appreciation for life. He graduated from Greeley High, got both his undergraduate degree and doctorate of law from University of Colorado in Boulder.

He married Gwendolyn Henry. They later divorced amicably and remained friends until her death in March 2009. He worked in Washington D.C. during the troubled times surrounding Martin Luther King’s assassination. His son, Brook, was also born in Washington in 1969.

Gary returned to Colorado and joined a law practice in Montrose. In 1984, he and his wife and son moved to Denver and he began work as a corporate attorney at Wells Fargo Bank (United Bank, Norwest Bank). He retired in 1999 and moved to Greeley. He married Donna Hotz (formerly Cearlock) in April 2000.

Gary’s love of travel was born between his junior and senior high school years when he took a sponsored trip to Europe traveling by bus to New York, a ship across the ocean to Italy, and toured many countries from Italy to France and across the channel to England. It took a total of two months. He loved it and told his mother that that trip was only the first of many trips.

Gary enjoyed life and was interested in a variety of topics from music to politics, history and English and sports. He was a very principled, generous, compassionate and loving man. He was appreciated for his gentleness and humor.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of Greeley, CO; son, Brook, and his brother, David and sister-in-law, Jil, of  Denver, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and former wife.

Plans for a memorial service have yet to be finalized.  An announcement will be published.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631.
