Friends of RMC, Tough to call him Steve because I always knew him as Chief. We served together on LOS ANGELES where he led a dynamite radio division, winning recognition as the best radio division on the waterfront at least twice. He was a fine sailor, leader and man. My thoughts and prayers join those of others who now must face life without him. God Bless Chief Patterson and God Bless America. John Eldridge

Quick wit and sense of humor indeed! As a junior officer, I learned something from Chief Patterson everyday. We destroyed the KW-7 together, and enjoyed it-he had me laughing the whole time. Great shipmate and mentor-God Bless you RMC and God bless your family. May the Lord grant you his peace.

Steve you were always a bright ray of sunlight on a gloomy day no matter what was happening. I will cherish your friendship and the many meals we shared and the projects that we would undertake. You could always be counted on to be there if I needed help. I know that God will welcome you with open arms and that you will be a great credit and addition to his team. I will miss you. Rest in peace Chief.

You were a member of our family for so many years, you will be missed. You were a great person for the love you gave our family, my Aunt and Christopher and for serving our country. We know you are always looking down on your loved ones and getting the rest your spirit needed.

Dad, You taught me the name of every tool in your tool box when I was 6yrs old.You showed me how to change oil in a car, would wrestle with me in South Carolina when I was 7yrs.You taught me how to ride my first motorcycle in San Diego Ca. and we flipped that “Scout” on the sand dunes of Exmouth Australia when I was 9yrs old,you told me and Cindy to not tell mom. When I was in choir you came to see me perform and took pictures and you made sure I had my “Sax” when I entered band in Japan.I use to complain about your beard when you would hug me ’cause it always made me itchy.
You were my dad from the day I was born and even after your last breath. We would have always been a family on if………. My Dad was a very intelligent man but not intelligent enough to seek proper help in fighting the battle of alcoholism.

His First daughter always… Stephanie Renee Patterson

I just found this. I am heartbroken that I missed you. You taught me to be a sailor. I have a picture of you in office. We have big smiles, in Japan after two days of selling soda. You were the best. And so are your kids. Rest in peace man.

Chief Patterson was my first Chief in my first boat (USS LA). He was the primary reason I stayed in until retirement. He was hilarious and taught me so much. He could do twenty things at the same time and never miss the ashtray with his cigarette while doing it. I can still hear him starting most sentences with “Hey buddy”. I still do several things the same way he taught me to over 30 years ago. One of his funniest stories was talking about when he finished Radio school and they had a long wait before the next one. Said they asked who knew Morse code and took that group somewhere else. They told them they could either pick up trash for a few months or go do a special project. He said he volunteered and the next thing he knew, he was on a river boat in Vietnam. He said he never volunteered again unless he knew exactly what is was.
