Daniel “Dennis” Askew, 71, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away Friday, July 23, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Gamber Community Center in Lee’s Summit, MO.
The family will begin to welcome visitors at 4 p.m. and a celebration of Dennis’ life will begin at 5 p.m., to be followed by additional fellowship of friends and family until 7 p.m. The family invites all to share memories of Dennis during the service.
Dennis was born on October 17, 1949, in Kansas City, MO. He graduated from Ruskin High School in 1967. After graduation Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Karen Beth Brown in 1969.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and upon return from deployment graduated from Longview Community College. Dennis joined the Ironworkers Local #10 where he built his career for over 25 years prior to retirement in 2005. During his career as an ironworker, he worked alongside his brother Tim and two of his sons, Brandon and Justin.
Dennis built a lifetime of memories with the love of his life, Karen. Together they traveled to Arizona to meet-up with dear friends Frankie and Larry, spent time at Truman Lake with friends Joe and Terry, made weekly trips to Mary’s Mountain Cookies (at Dennis’ request), and went on cross-country adventures on his Harley Davidson.
He worked hard to provide for his family. His three boys, Daniel, Brandon and Justin were his pride and joy. He taught them the value of hard work, importance of fun and humor, the value of good music, and provided them with opportunities to learn and grow. The boys recall fond memories, which include summers they spent swimming in the backyard pool, shooting hoops in the driveway, painfully early morning fishing missions, ski trips to Colorado and vacations on a houseboat.
Dennis had four grandchildren, Darryl, RaeLynn, Ava and Aiden, who brought an immense amount of joy to his life. He loved to spend time with them attending their school events, playing card games or chess, watching them perform and play in various activities, taking them fishing, golfing, swimming, or on a vacation to Disney World. He was proud to be their Papa.
Dennis was known for his fun-loving spirit, smile and kind heart. He was an ornery guy who loved to have a good time whether he was fishing, golfing or kicking back with friends and family. He made a huge impact on many lives and his passing has left a hole in many hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Irene Askew and brother Tim Askew. Dennis is survived by his wife Karen, three sons Daniel, Brandon (Crystal), Justin (Laura) and four grandchildren, Darryl, RaeLynn, Ava and Aiden.
He was one of my very best friends.
Can’t believe he is gone.
Spent so many good times with him and it has given me so many memories and I will cherish the memories for the rest of my life.
RIP my dear friend.
Love to his family.
My deepest condolences. I really liked Dennis a lot. In all my years as an ironworker, I had some of my most enjoyable times with him.
I have many fun memories of playing cards and swimming with Dennis & Karen and just enjoying their company. Mike & Dennis told the best stories of their crazy younger days. Dennis had a great laugh, he laughed alot. I am so sorry for his family, I know you will miss him beyond words. Love to you all.
HogHead was a dad to me. He always listened, no matter when or why I showed up unexpectedly. He and aunt Karen are just cool like that. They’ve been there for me my whole life. Even tho the fishing shows on Saturday morning wore me out when I was little….I’d love to watch a fishing show together again. He is, like Grandma Brown would say….’He’s Cool’.
Love to all my family.
Thanks for the memories.
Rest in peace.
Oh Karen I’m so sorry , Dennis was so kind to Jody when he was sick , I know your heart is broken ,
Sorry to learn of his passing. In our later years we worked out of town together. He was a good friend and great Ironworker. Always with a smile and up beat attitude. Rest in Peace Brother.
I was a classmate of Dennis’s in high school and I think in junior high as well. It is so hard when we lose our loved ones I am thankful that your family was blessed with such a good man. I am also proud of his service to his country – especially during the Vietnam Era. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
