As an animal chalapin who works with people to help them prepare for, cope with and move on after pet loss, I frequently hear, just as you noted, that people often find it more difficult to handle the loss of a pet than that of a human in their lives. I know of no human relationship wherein the other person consistently sings our praises when we have bed-head, water weight gain or have just cussed out the chair leg that stubbed our toe. Our pets adore us, no matter what. Our daily routines are deeply impacted by our pets’ need for our care, too, so losing them means there’s an enormous hole in our lives. Naturally, we’d feel this void acutely. Thank you for validating these people’s feelings.
