Grady L. Moncrief

Grady Lee Moncrief, 76, passed away peacefully in the early hours of February 1st, 2022 at Moberly Regional Hospital with his children at his side.

Grady was born the first of five children to Grady Augustus Moncrief and Lillian Blanche Moncrief Hoffman on February 12th, 1945 in Moultrie, Georgia. After the death of his father in 1953, his mother moved the family to their grandfather Lee Magruder’s farm at Crooked Creek, south of Shelbina, Missouri. There, Grady attended and graduated from Shelbina High School.

Grady spent his life as a business owner and a trucker. He was said to be a master salesman, even once selling a color television to a blind customer. He also had a knack for mechanics. He owned his own mechanic shop and fuel station for a time. In his later years, he drove commercial trucks for a living.

Grady was congenial, well-liked, and a good friend to all who knew him. He loved animals and children. His best friend was a one-eyed dog named Choco, and he showed love to his great-grandchildren by bringing them toys and sugary snacks.

He is preceded in death by father Grady Augustus Moncrief; grandfather Lee Magruder; mother Lillian Blanche Moncrief Hoffman; stepfather J.W. Hoffman; brother-in-law and stepbrother Jim Hoffman; stepsister Susan Beatty.

He is survived by brothers Bill Moncrief with wife Jo Moncrief, and Jimmy Moncrief; sisters Sarah Hoffman, and Faye Jennings with husband Ed Jennings; stepbrothers Larry Hoffman, Bill Hoffman and Kenny Hoffman; children Shelly Moncrief, and Lee Moncrief with wife Tracy Moncrief; grandchildren Kaden Kirtley with wife Chelsea Kirtley, Casey Smith with husband Alex Smith, Starr Allen with husband Andrew Allen, and Jessica Moncrief; great-grandchildren Brynn Smith, Molly Smith, Gabriel Smith, Asher Smith, Hannah Mae Smith, and Lincoln Allen.

Grady’s life will be celebrated in a private family ceremony. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren will spread his ashes at Crooked Creek, where he spent some of his happiest years.

Sorry for the loss of a good friend and neighbor. Hunter always headed to garage when he seen Grady go out and they would sit and eat pork rinds.
