The youngest of three children born on November 10th 1980, in Kansas city MO. He was raised in Raytown MO graduating from Raytown South High School. He worked in erosion control and was CPESC certified in that industry. He also worked installing fences. He was so proficient in heavy machinery that his moves were very smooth and calculated using a loader.

John was a drummer since he was young eventually becoming known as the master of the drumkit. He absolutely loved music, teaching himself how to play guitar, bass guitar as well as the keyboard. He was a member of a couple bands who performed in many venues around the Kansas city area. He enjoyed a variety of music and attended many concerts and musical performances.

He is survived by mother, Karen Bridenstine; father, Phillip Fortney (Becky); brother, Marc Fortney (Cassy); sister, Jennifer Tartaglia; step-sisters, Tess Danielson (Brett) and Chelsey Stryker; grandmother, Shirley Sewell; great uncle, Ron Fenton; nephews, Eric Fortney, Daniel and Joe Tartaglia, and Bruce and Walter Danielson. John is preceded in death by niece, Marianne Fortney.

Many would describe him as very independent and intelligent. John would always let you know his opinion of anything.  He was very funny and had perfected the element of sarcasm. John was a very unique and talented individual who was a hard worker and took pride in the quality of his work. He will be missed and always remembered by many.

In leu of flowers, the family set up a memorial scholarship in John’s honor for a graduating senior at either Raytown or Raytown South High School who is continuing education in college by either playing in Marching Band or a degree in Music with emphasis in band. Donations can be made to:

John was one of my best friends in my early twenties. He was my roommate, my drummer, and one of the few people that I knew always had my back. I moved out of town over a decade ago, but John always answered my call when I was back in town and it seemed like no time had passed. He was definitely considered a part of my extended family and I offer my absolute condolences to his immediates. So saddened to have not known. May he rest in peace with a his foot on the pedal and with a drumstick in hand.
