Laura Eva Aker (Bateman), 79, Independence, MO., passed away April 22, 2006 at her daughter Peggy’s home in Kingsville from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, April 29, at the East Alton branch of Community of Christ Church, 16999 E. 23rd., St., Independence, MO. 64057. Laura Bateman was born September 28, 1926 in Independence, MO., and grew up in the age of flappers, model Ts, prohibition, the Great Depression, WWII, and Franklin Roosevelt. There was no TV and she used to ’watch’ the radio. She graduated from William Chrisman High School and held jobs at the K.C. Star and S.W. Bell Co., before her marriage to Johnny Aker in 1946. She was a unique, honest, and fair person who, after marrying, committed her life to raising daughters Peggy and Kathy, and her niece Nancy. In addition to her family, Laura lived nature, fishing and camping, swimming, and visiting state parks and museums in Missouri, and lived trips to the Colorado Rocky Mountains. She retired from the IRS after 24 years of service and traveled extensively throughout the USA with Johnny; her favorite places being National Parks, mountains, and areas of great natural beauty. Laura was preceded in death by her husband Johnny (1993) and her daughter Kathy (2005) and brothers Carl and Leonard. Laura is survived by her daughter Peggy, sisters Larena and Viola, brother Bob, niece Nancy and other nieces and nephews, grandchildren Issac, Donque, Yoric, Brian, and Jennifer, and in-laws and great grandchildren. You will be missed greatly dear mother, aunt, grandma, sister.
