Matthew Lee Decker was born December 25, 1966 to Verbin Decker and Andrea Chapman in Oklahoma City, OK. Matthew passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at home in Grandview, MO.
Matthew’s father preceded him in death. Survivors include his mother, Andrea Driller of Grandview; sister, Tiffany and her husband John Edmondson of Kansas City, MO; his beloved and constant companion of 11 years his blue healer, Sky; aunts and uncles Sharon Carroccia of Northfield, NJ, John Chapman of Kansas City, MO, Paul Chapman of Philadelphia, PA, Mark Chapman of Kansas City, MO, Aimee Harness of Grandview, MO, Edwina Burns of Michigan; cousins Major T. Chapman of Lawrence, KS, Chris Decker of Denver, CO, and many other cousins and friends.
Matthew was known as the “Pepper Guy” at the Grandview Farmer’s Market and in regional networks because of his expertise in exotic hot peppers of many varieties as well as specialty herbs and spices and cactus plants. He was very proud of his Oklahoma background, enjoyed gourmet cooking, hunting, fishing, and the beauty and solace of nature. His previous training and career was in welding and working in the oil fields.
While Matthew was comfortable in solitude, he was also known for his “country boy” charm with a polite, humorous, helpful attitude that included people of varied interests and personalities in his circle of friends.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 1 at 6pm with Memorial Service at 7pm at Grandview United Methodist Church, 12613 Grandview Road, Grandview MO 64030. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Kansas City Pet Project www.kcpetproject.org.
Andrea, we are so sorry to hear about your son. Our prayers are with you and your family.

Matt, we had a lot of good times going to school together. Seems so wrong that the best of the best is gone at such an early age. I will always remember the friendship we had. Fly high my brother.
I will forever miss our constant texts and conversations .I couldn’t have asked for a better best friend than what you were to me and for that I will forever be grateful . Forever in my heart and never to be forgotten! My heart and prayers go out to the family may the good Lord comfort and carry you through this time of loss.

Matt was a good friend and teacher to me, and I took his expertise and advice completely for granted. I am sorry for his passing, and I am truly going to miss him. My sincerest condolences to his family and other friends.
Matt, I hadn’t seen you in years, but we communicated on Facebook a few times. I remember growing up, when is spend the night with Tiff, I’d wish I had a high brother like you. Always so nice, although I’m sure you guys had your differences, what siblings don’t. Rest well my friend. God Bless. You were always such a good guy. I haven’t seen you in years but you were one of those people that stood out from the crowd even though you weren’t boisterous or sought attention. You will always be the soft spoken, mannerly boy I grew up with. Peace be with you and your loved ones.
So sorry for your loss. He helped me out at the farmers market this spring. Such a kind man.

Saying Goodbye is not easy for any of us and our hearts are saddened by your passing. We will miss the simple Good Morning and the honesty in our conversations. Andrea, no parent should have to go through the loss of her/his child. My heart breaks for you. You are in my prayers. Matthew has found peace. May the peace of God’s love give you comfort.
My best childhood friend growing up in the colony, I will always cherish those memories. May you be at peace, one day we will hunt together again.
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of our “Pepper Guy”. Matt has been a staple at the Grandview Farmers Market since we opened several years ago. His presence will be a void at the Market. RIP Matt. Condolences to the family.

You seemed so proud of him and what he was doing around your home – planting peppers, tomatoes, etc. You are such a loving and supportive woman.
