Michael “Mike” Laverne Foster

Michael “Mike” Laverne Foster, age 70, a resident of the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Warrensburg, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021.

Mike was born March 28, 1951 in Trenton, Missouri, the son of Benny (Sr.) and LaVon (Bennett) O’Dell. Mike was a 1969 graduate of Northeast High School, Kansas City, Mo.

Mike served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War conflict from June 1971 until he was Honorably Discharged as a Boatswain’s Mate Seaman on August 11, 1977. During his time in the Navy, Mike was stationed in Yokosuka Japan serving on the USS Vernon County; was Master-At-Arms Chief Petty Officer; when discharged his last duty assignment was Pearl Harbor Hawaii Naval Station. After the service, Mike worked as a mechanic at KCP&L for 16 years. Mike enjoyed working on old cars and was an avid Chiefs fan.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, paternal grandparents Charles and Abbie Jane (Hatfield) O’Dell; maternal grandmother Maxine (Conner-Bennett) Crooks; brother, Benny O’Dell, Jr. and nephew William Miller.

Mike is survived by his son Shawn Foster of Independence, Mo, daughter Amy Barker (Joey Barker) of Lee’s Summit, Mo, six grandchildren; Alexis Grant, Michael Foster, Jeremiah Foster, Joey Barker, Annabelle Wood & Henry Barker, sisters; Stephanie Charlene Miller of Kansas City, Mo., Terri Peel and husband Greg of Bates City, Mo., Jennifer Cole and husband Rick of Olathe, Ks.

Interment services will take place at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Mo. With full Military Honors on October 22, 2021 at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Mike’s name to the Veterans Assistance League; 1300 Veterans Road, Warrensburg MO 64093.

    Mike was such a nice kind man.. Never complained about anything..it was such a honor to know him and to have the opportunity to care for Mike.. May he R.I.P. AND KNOW HE WILL ALWAYS HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART.

    I worked with Mike during his time at KCP&L he was wonderful person, my thoughts are with his family at this time. I kept in touch with him for many years so sorry to hear of his passing
