Nancy Lorraine (Alber) Barnett

Nancy Lorraine (Alber) Barnett went home to be with her Heavenly Father on December 21, 2023. She was 90 years old. She was born October 19, 1933 to Glen and Melvina (Fuller) Alber in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Nancy grew up in a loving family of three brothers, who doted on her, and a loving sister. She attended the Michigan School for the Deaf. Her adventurous spirit took her to Atlanta, Georgia when she was 19 years old. She later met and married John C. Barnett, Sr., on October 21, 1955. They later moved to Independence, Missouri. John and Nancy spent the next 49 years together.

Nancy loved traveling and made it to 48 states. She was busy reading, embroidering, quilting, and working puzzles when she wasn’t traveling. Nancy worked various jobs through the years. Her last employer was the Kansas City Royals, which she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church (formerly Grace Heartland), where she faithfully attended and served in the sign language choir, Deaf Silent Hands. Her favorite passion was the sewing group, Caring Hands, which started in 2010. She sewed and donated over 4,000 items to different organizations, always adding a touch to her embroidery. In the Deaf Community, Nancy was a member of numerous clubs. Some included The Jackson County Chapter of the Missouri Association of the Deaf and Metro Golden Agers Social. Nancy was always there if there was a family dinner or grandchild’s birthday party.

Preceding Nancy in death were her husband John Sr.; son John Jr.; grandson Justin Barnett; brother and their spouses Jack and Marge Alber, Pat and Laura Alber, Frank and Phyliss Alber; and nephew Gary Alber.

Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched over the years: sons Bill Barnett and Marian (Hurd), Joe Barnett and Susan (Wilson), and daughter Linda and Bill (Morgan); 13 grandchildren and their spouses; and 27 great grandchildren whom she adored. She also leaves her dearly loved sister Connie Moore, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and their spouses of Michigan. We will never forget her beautiful blue eyes, smile, deep loved for family, and those kisses on the lips. She will be dearly missed!

Visitation will be 9am, Saturday, December 30, 2023, followed by funeral services at 9:30am, at Bethel Baptist Church, 2406 Rte 291, Independence, Missouri 64057. Burial in Mt. Washington Cemetery.

I will never forget Nancy for my Mom Agnes Tulloch were good friends for a long time and our exercising together for maybe 5-7 years at Palmer Center in Independence until my job changed hours on me. Yes, Nancy was always so sweet and kindhearted, always thinking of others. She will be sorely missed but know she’ll be happy to see my Mom up there having the time of their lives with families and friends who have gone before them. ??
