Retha Jeannette Salter, 87, of Independence, Missouri, passed away on March 31st, 2023, with family by her side. Jeannette was born on August 22, 1935, in Mendon, Missouri, to Virgil and Edith Myers, and was the second of their three daughters. She attended Rosedale High School and graduated in 1953. After graduation, she started work at Hallmark, where she met her husband of 67 years, Joseph Salter. They were married shortly there after and settled in Independence, Missouri, where they raised two sons, Michael and David. Jeannette spent most of her career life as a small business owner and later as a bookkeeper for Parker-McCrory.
Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, and she was extremely proud of each one of them. Some of her fondest memories were playing co-ed softball with her sons and daughters-in-law as the team catcher, often receiving the pitches from her husband on the mound. She spent years on a bowling team with her kids and also had a love for dancing. Her home was open every weekend to her four grandchildren, where she spent her evenings playing games, coloring, and reading books to them. In addition to always attending and cheering loudly at their numerous sporting events, some of the best times with her grandkids were spent camping at Beaver Lake in Arkansas, where they would bike, play catch, and snorkel together. Later in life, she was blessed with five great-grandchildren who equally enjoyed being in her presence.
Besides her family, her other love was shopping for clothes, jewelry, home decor and collecting holiday decorations which she carefully displayed each season. Every September she looked forward to spending her birthday money at Santa-Cali-Gon Days in the craft tents.
Jeannette will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Joe Salter, her two sons, Michael Salter (Sonya) and David Salter (Sheryl), her four grandchildren, Shaun Salter, Jennifer Balsbaugh (Tom), Kenzie Salter, Brian Salter, her five great-grandchildren, Morgan Balsbaugh, Natasha Salter, Caleb Balsbaugh, Hayden Lucas, Ashlyn Salter, and her sister, Corky Sandusky. She is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Edith Myers, her sister, Dorla Lemen, and brother-in-law Bob Sandusky.
A celebration of life with be held Sunday, April 16th at 1pm at the Moose Lodge 10 Sugar Creek, 510 ½ N Sterling Ave, Sugar Creek, MO 64054.
