Violet Irene Campbell Sackman, age 94 years, Independence, MO, died on May 24, 2004, at the Rosewood Center of the Groves. Mrs. Sackman was born on August 13, 1909, in McGregor, MI, and was baptized in Lake Huron on July 21, 1918, as a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Her parents, William J. and Minnie Sherman Campbell, moved their family to Independence in December 1919. She was the bookkeeper for several family businesses near the Independence Square. On January 5, 1935, she married Vernon E. Sackman and they were devoted companions for over 69 years. She was a prayerful and loving wife and mother and an accomplished seamstress and homemaker. Sister Sackman was active at the Walnut Park Congregation in music and planning worship services there and for the nursing homes she regularly visited. She was an avid student of the Scriptures and in later years taught a weekly adult class, but particularly enjoyed working with children, writing materials and manuals, and conducting teacher training classes at General Conferences and for Center Stake, where she served as Vacation Church School Director. Mrs. Sackman was preceded in death by a son, Donald Gene, on July 2, 1941; her parents; four brothers, Walter E., Osro J., Lewis T., Cecil C. Campbell; and two sisters, Lena Crandall and Mabel Clinton. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Carolyn Sackman Scafe of Independence; a son, Dr. Vernon E. Sackman, Jr., of University Heights, OH; six grandchildren, Marcia Shearer of Reno, NV, Robin Blubaugh and Lisa Havens of Independence, Matthew Scafe of Austin, TX, Ned Sackman of Philadelphia, PA, and Charles Sackman of Shaker Heights, OH. Also surviving are nine greatgrandchildren, two great-greatgrandchildren, seven sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, seven nephews and seven nieces. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Blue Springs Congregation of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 5555 Valley View Rd., Blue Springs, MO.
