Steven Michael Latting, born on May 18, 1961 to Verl and Vernell Latting, in Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on November 30, 2024, in Independence in his home. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Cheri and a proud father to their daughters, Stephanie, Aubrey, and Samantha. Steven’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to being a good father.
As a hardworking man who dedicated himself fully to both his career and home life, Steve exemplified what it meant to be a provider and could fix just about anything he set out to. He nurtured relationships with warmth, kindness, and humor that will forever resonate within the hearts of those who knew him. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren—Aryzona, Finn, DaKota, Gracie, and Miles who brought immense joy into his life.
Steve had an undeniable love for hot rods and owned several over the course of his life. In addition to cars, Steve had a profound affection for dogs—a trait that endeared him even more to those around him, and that is a love and passion he passed on to his daughters. His beloved dogs were always considered members of the family.
Steve is survived by his mother Vernell; siblings Charles Latting (Sadie Latting), Jeanette Singleton (Charlie Singleton), Pat Willis (Mark Willis), Tonia Richardson (Dave Richardson); along with numerous nieces and nephews who adored their uncle deeply. Each member of this family carries forward memories filled with laughter.
The memorial service honoring Steve’s life will take place on Monday, December 9th from 2-4 PM at Heartland Cremation & Burial Society located at 6113 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown MO 64133.
Friends are invited to join in celebrating the legacy left behind by this extraordinary man whose impact will continue through all whom he touched throughout his journey here on Earth.
Though we mourn the loss of such a wonderful soul today—we also celebrate everything he stood for: hard work rooted in love; passions pursued wholeheartedly;—and above all else—the importance placed upon family bonds which will remain unbreakable even after passing.
Cheri and family,
Our sincere condolences on the loss of Steve. We have good memories of working with him at Percy Kent, going on two float trips and just hanging out as friends when we lived in Independence. Truly a good guy!

I have my own big brothers but always considered you one too! You tried to teach me to drive a stick in your pick up at 23rd and Lawndale. I wiped out someone’s picket fence. You scooted over and drove us the hell out of there. I already miss the great times we had growing up brother.

I am heartbroken and shocked to hear of our friend and coworker Steve’s passing. I worked with him for many years at the City of Independence, and always felt a sense of calmness and happiness just by being around him. Steve was always eager to help when needed. He would go beyond what you asked and would always be sure to check in later to see how things worked out.
Steve was a genuine person and a good man who cared deeply for others. I will miss talking to him about our dogs, and sharing stories about our families. I will just miss him.
To the family, my sincerest condolences for your loss.
