In Loving Memory of James Martin “Marty” Applegate
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of James Martin “Marty” Applegate. Marty passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2025, at Center point Hospital in Independence, Missouri.
Marty was born on October 7, 1960, in Nevada, Missouri, to James “Juice” Applegate and Caryl “Gaga” Applegate. He is survived by his devoted sister, Melissa Jane Gift (Applegate), and her two sons, Terry Lynwood Gift and James Matthew Gift.
Marty had the joy of being married to Tracy Lero and together they built a life in Oak Grove, Missouri, full of love, laughter, and resilience. Tracy brought two wonderful children into the marriage, Matthew Johnston and Amber Hook; Marty cherished the opportunity to help raise them as his own.
Marty lived a full and vibrant life. He found great joy in the outdoors—hunting, fishing, and embracing nature whenever he could. He never met a stranger, and his warmth, humor, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. A man with a heart as big as his stories, he was always ready to lend a helping hand or share a laugh.
He was especially proud of his reputation as a natural-born salesman—famously able to “sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves.” That charm and wit were just part of what made Marty so beloved.
Marty will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, humor, and love will live on in the many lives he touched.
For all those who can attend, there will be a celebration of life event held and the Eagles Club in Nevada, Missouri on August 09, 2025. The family invites friends and relatives to attend the event and share your favorite ‘Marty” story. The club was gracious enough to allow for this event to take place from 12:00 to 04:00.
