Merrill Worthing Watt II, 80, passed away on February 26, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri. Born on September 9, 1945, Merrill led a life marked by service, dedication, and accomplishment.
Merrill earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Missouri. He built a distinguished career as a Licensed Professional Engineer, contributing his expertise to both the government and private sectors, including his tenure at Burns and McDonnell. His work left a lasting impact on the engineering community.
A proud veteran, Merrill served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers from February 1969 to January 2000. His military career was defined by his specialization in the design and construction management of roads, earth dams, and timber and steel bridges. Merrill served with honor in Vietnam, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt, earning numerous distinguished awards for his service. He continued his commitment to the military through the Army Reserve and the Missouri Army National Guard.
Beyond his professional and military achievements, Merrill was a friend and mentor to many within engineering and veterans’ groups. His guidance and camaraderie were deeply valued by those who knew him.
Merrill is survived by his sister Barbara Buck and his brother James Watt, nephews, nieces and many dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 12 at Northminster Presbyterian Church, located at 1441 NE Englewood Rd., Kansas City, MO 64118. A viewing will begin at 9:30 AM, followed by the service at 10:30 AM. Burial will take place at 12:30 PM at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
Merrill’s legacy of service and mentorship will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring comfort to those he leaves behind.
