Michael “Mike” Joseph Cosgrove

Michael “Mike” Joseph Cosgrove, 77, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away March 6, 2026. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on January 31, 1949, and is preceded in death by his parents John J. and Mary Catherine Cosgrove.

Mike grew up in Kansas City and attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic grade school. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 1967. He played basketball in Junior College and then graduated from Rockhurst College with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

He taught high school history, owned Cosgrove’s Bar on Troost from February 1987 to December 1994, and was a technician for Hill-Rom for several years. Eventually Mike ended his career at ICAN assisting adults with developmental disabilities which he found very fulfilling.

Mike and Dorothy married on September 15, 1988, and raised three successful children. Mike was a very devoted husband and father who loved his family deeply and took great pride in his children.

Mike was an avid sports lover and enjoyed cheering on the Missouri Tigers, Kansas City Chiefs, and The Royals. He enjoyed golfing whenever he could find the time. He loved listening and dancing to a variety of music…top of the list was Al Green and Hall and Oates. He was a simple, quiet man who would sometimes catch people off guard with his quick wit and dry sense of humor.

Following a cascade of health issues in 2014 and 2015, Mike entered care at Delmar Gardens where his family visited him often; he still lived there upon his passing. The family is grateful for the care Mike received at Delmar, and are especially grateful for the care administered by Caroline, Autumn, and the ACG Hospice team. We take comfort knowing he is at peace.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Cosgrove, three children, Shannon, Quinlan, and Madeline Cosgrove, and grandson, Rowan Sidebottom.

A Celebration of Life honoring Mike is planned for Saturday, May 30, from 11:30 to 2:30 at Tanner’s Bar & Grill, 14337 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS.

Mike Cosgrove and I lived two blocks from one another when I was in grade school around 1964-67.. I was born with a deformed right arm and found basketball challenging but I loved the game. Mike used to “coach” me in basketball, giving me the incentive to make the best of my disability. We met when I was trying to shoot baskets in my driveway and he was driving by my house on his bicycle. He stopped to shoot some baskets and later to give me some pointers. He told me I had a disability ONLY if I acted as if I did. While I obviously never played like Michael Jordan, I did learn to enjoy playing around on the court, playing HORSE and whatever with Mike. He probably did more for me to help develop my self confidence and self-esteem than any person I met in my lifetime, and I attribute my successes in life to his mentorship and to his very kind heart. He called me “shrimp” and used to mess up my hair when he’d join me for basketball, and I loved it!. He took me to four of his high school basket ball games where I sat in the De La Salle cheering section. I was in 5th and 6th grade and really felt privileged. In early 1968, my father and mother were transferred back to Kyoto, Japan, and Mike and I unfortunately lost touch. My sincere sympathy to the entire Cosgrove family as well as to his friends and former classmates at De La Salle High School.

Deepest Condolences to Dorothy and Mike’s whole family. I have such fond memories that revolve around Cosgrove’s – shuffleboard, good times, karaoke, and of course, so many of their incomparable pizzas…

I knew Michael from Delmar gardens of OP he was a sweet and kind man. I donated a plant in honor of him to the team at Delmar. I had the pleasure of honoring his service to the United States Marine Corps in his last hours of life.
