George S. Mitre

George S. Mitre, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 28, 2026, passing away peacefully at his home in Independence, Missouri.

Born on February 16, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, to Santos and Alice Mitre, George led a life characterized by service, dedication, and deep faith. Shortly after his high school graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. He dedicated 22 years to active duty military service before transitioning to a successful civilian career in the aerospace industry, where he ultimately retired from Lockheed Skunk Works in 2002.

A devoted born-again Christian, George’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a faithful and active member of Grace Baptist Church in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where he found great joy and spiritual fellowship.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Santos and Alice; his siblings; his first wife, Lucy; and his son, Jeffery.

His legacy of love lives on in the family he leaves behind. He is survived by his beloved spouse, Merry Sue Mitre; his sons, Eric Mitre, Nathan Mitre, and Joel Mitre; his step-son, Ryan Lacey; and his step-daughter, Brooke Lacey. George also leaves behind a proud generation of grandchildren who will cherish his memory: grandsons Jay Mitre, Clay Mitre, Broden Durst and Wyatt Lacey; and granddaughters Hannah Bernal, Carrina Mitre, Tori Marunde-Van Wig, Katie Mitre, Jordan Lacey and Devin Lacey.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate George’s life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 850 MO-150, Lee’s Summit, MO.
