Timothy Allan Filley

Timothy Allan Filley, 50, of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away on Wednesday, July 1st at Lee’s Summit Medical Center after an 18-month battle with brain cancer. Tim was a loving husband and father, hard worker, and an avid hobbyist. His kind and easygoing nature helped him create community wherever he went.

Tim was born June 18th, 1976 in Kansas City MO. He found a home with Jim and Pat, and soon after, his beloved sister Mary Katherine. Tim and Mary became close with their cousin Paul; the three were partners in childhood crimes, traveled extensively with their grandparents and aunt, and matured into loving and caring adults. Tim was deeply involved in scouting with Troop 421 of the Boy Scouts of America, Thunderbird District. During that time he earned the right to join the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and chose as his tribal name “Warrior Mighty Rolling Thunder”. While working at Hy-Vee, he met his future wife, Kara, and her three daughters, Sierra, Rachel, and Emily, where he quickly stepped into the role of fatherhood. Tim, Kara, and the girls built a life in Lee’s Summit where he spent his 20-year career in management at Bed Bath & Beyond. Dedicated to furthering his education, he pursued his BS & MBA from Rockhurst University; some of his fondest memories were from traveling to Barcelona during his studies.

When Tim found something he loved, he went all in. As a lifelong fan of the KU Jayhawks, Tim decked out his basement in crimson and blue. He showed the same dedication to the Royals and Chiefs, as anyone who’s seen his hat collection could attest. He not only brewed beer as a hobby, but he won accolades on the local microbrewery scene (and nearly lost a foot in the process!). Tim found his calling when he started building with Lego. As a creator and Lego Ambassador, he won multiple awards for his builds and his Instagram account @TKBricks drew a 150K+ community of friends who followed along.

Tim was quick to laugh, and slow to judge; he was honest, kind, and full of integrity. Though he was an introvert, he loved spending time with his family and close friends, and could stay up all night in conversation or a game night. Though cancer took him from us far too soon, he was deeply loved and will be forever missed. He is survived by his wife Kara; children Sierra & husband Zach, Rachel & partner Ian, and Emily; and father, Jim Filley. He is predeceased by his mother, Patricia Filley (2024); sister Mary Katherine Filley Coleman (2001); grandparents Oscar & Eleanor Zeller, and Henry & Jeanette Filley, and dog Lucy.

The memorial will be held at 2-4pm on Thursday, July 9th, 2026 at Heartland Cremation Society in Raytown, MO. The family will receive guests for the first hour, followed by a service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Head for the Cure, an organization that drives awareness and fundraising for brain cancer research.
