Richard “Dick” Ray, 88, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on July 3, 2026, at North Point Rehabilitation in Paola, Kansas. He was born on December 13, 1937, on a farm near Paola, Kansas.
Dick proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958, stationed at Atsugi Naval Air Base in Japan. He received an honorable discharge before returning home to begin a distinguished career in law enforcement.
He served as a police officer with the Paola Police Department from 1959 to 1965 before joining the Olathe Police Department, where he served from 1965 to 1974. In 1974, Dick continued his career with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, faithfully serving the community until his retirement in 1998 as a sergeant.
Dick dedicated more than three decades to protecting and serving others, earning the respect of his fellow officers and the communities he served.
He was preceded in death by: father, Glenn Ray; mother, Grace Ray; brother, Kenneth Ray; nephew, Mark Ray; and niece, Kandie Martin.
Survivors include: wife, Kaye Ray; sister, Joan Curnutte; daughter, Kelle (Ray) Boyer; daughter, Stacy (Ray) Wintrode; son, Mike McCullough; daughter, Kim McCullough; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.
We are so sorry for your loss. Words cannot express what the heart feels but beautiful memories are what we hold on to and gets us through each day. May your Dad rest in peace. Our heartfelt condolences to you and the family.
We loved your dad “Dick”. He was the best neighbor and friend to my parents. He was always smiling and had the biggest heart. I pray you find comfort and peace in your memories. He will live forever in your heart.
I worked with Dick at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. He always had a smile on his face when you saw him. He was a hard worker and one of the easiest people to talk with. God speed brother in Blue. RIP
