Virginia “Jenny” Viar

Virginia “Jenny” Hall Walk Viar, 86, of Overland Park, KS , passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026.

Jenny was born December 12, 1939, in Sedalia, MO, the daughter of William Hall Walk and Jane Gray Greer. She grew up on family farms in Longwood and Houstonia, Missouri, where she developed the strong work ethic, resilience, and appreciation for family that remained with her throughout her life.

Jenny attended Central Missouri State University, where she earned an associate degree in Secretarial Training. While attending college, she met Jack B. Viar, and the two were married on April 3, 1959, in Miami, Oklahoma. Together they shared 62 years of marriage, building a loving home and raising their family in Jefferson City, Columbia, Mexico, Fulton, and North Kansas City before retiring in Clinton, Missouri.

Throughout her career, Jenny worked for the Missouri Department of Education, the Missouri Department of Probation and Parole, and later the City of North Kansas City. She retired after 23 years as City Clerk at North Kansas City City Hall, where she enjoyed her work and formed lasting friendships. She embraced retirement with RV camping and travel to discover new towns, art projects, volunteer work, church, walking conservation trails, and most importantly, time with her family. She treasured lifelong friendships, especially those with her sister Betty Jane and the close-knit group of friends affectionately known as the “Wahoos.” Her kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering love for her family will be remembered by all who knew her. Jenny was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She considered herself fortunate to have lived a life rich in family, friendship, and love.

During the final two years of her life, Jenny was surrounded by the compassionate care of the dedicated staff at SeniorCare Private Home in Overland Park. Her happiness, positive spirit, and loving nature never faded, and her family will always be grateful for the exceptional care, dignity, and love shown to her by those who became like family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack B. Viar, and her parents, William Hall Walk and Jane Gray Walk.

Surviving are one son, Andrew J. Viar, Kansas City, MO; two daughters, Julie A. Rinas of Austin, TX, and Amy L.(David) Watkins of Overland Park, KS; two grandsons, Steven D. Viar of Smithville, MO and Michael H. (Gina) Kraft of Chicago, IL; two granddaughters, Jacqueline (Michael) Mayer of Austin, TX and Emily (Nicholas) Matthews of Austin, TX; three great-grandchildren, Ellie, James, and Harrison; and one sister, Betty Jane Reid of Houstonia, MO.

Visitation will be held at 10:00am on Friday, August 7, 2026 at Resurrection Wesley Chapel, Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Avenue, Leawood, KS 66224. Celebration of Jenny’s Life will be held at 11:00am. A reception will follow in the Wesley Narthex.

A private family burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City, Kansas.
