Wayne Allen Swetnam, 94, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Born on June 22, 1932, Wayne lived a long life of love for family and community.
A proud graduate of North Kansas City High School, Wayne excelled as an All-State Offensive Lineman. He continued his education at the University of Missouri, where he played football and lettered under the legendary Don Faurot. He was a member of the ATO fraternity. It was at Mizzou where Wayne met Madalene, his lifetime companion for almost 70 years. After serving as a pilot in the United States Air Force and earning an honorable discharge as a second lieutenant, Wayne embarked on a successful career that culminated in owning AAA Gas Company headquartered in Richmond, Missouri.
Wayne’s passions extended far beyond his professional life. A gifted vocalist, he shared his love of music as a soloist and choir member at churches in Richmond, Missouri, and Lee’s Summit. He also enjoyed performing at the Farris Opry in Richmond and with the Ararat Shrine Club Big Band in Kansas City. Wayne was an accomplished gardener and an active member of numerous organizations and clubs throughout his life.
Wayne is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Madalene; his parents, David and Dollie; his brothers, Lester and Ralph; and his beautiful granddaughter Rachel.
He is survived by his daughter Caren Sprague (Neil); sons Jeffrey Swetnam (Janet) and Gregory Swetnam (Kris); grandchildren Leslie Newsam Goellner (Nick), Paige Raminfar (Alex), Sarah Roberts (Jacob), Jacob Swetnam, Alexandra Moore (Kyle), Andrew Swetnam; step-grandchildren Max Sprague (Amy) and Garrett Sprague; and eight great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, August 21, at 3:00 at the Courtyard Community Center of John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit. A reception will follow from 3:30 to 6:00 in the Courtyard Library. Wayne’s final resting place will be Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Higginsville.
