David Wilson Freeland, 83, of Independence, Missouri, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Hope Chapel, 1150 NE Woods Chapel Road, Lee’s Summit, Missouri 64064. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. immediately prior to the service. Graveside services will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Missouri.
David was born on November 7, 1942, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ernest Wilson Freeland and Opal Marie Freeland. He graduated from East High School and earned a degree in Social Studies from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
David proudly served in the Army Reserve from 1965 to 1971 with Midwest units, including brief periods of active duty at Fort Leonard Wood and Fort McCoy. In 1966 he married the love of his life, Connie Marie; they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. That same year he began a 32-year career as a window clerk for the United States Postal Service. David had a strong faith in God and attended Hope Chapel for the last 39 years.
Following his retirement, he completed a degree in Special Education and taught history at Plaza Heights Christian School. He continued to enjoy traveling and spending time with family. David and Connie traveled to all 50 states, including cruises to Alaska on their 40th anniversary and Hawaii on their 50th.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Opal, and by four brothers, Paul, Earl, Don, and Roy.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Connie; his children, Kristen (Ryan) Reed and David Michael (Jill); seven grandchildren, Danielle (Collin), Kaitlyn (Dakota), Mikayla (Jason), Briana (Collin), Sophie, Will, and Max; and ten great-grandchildren, Cavhan, Emmaus, Janessa, Romona, Ophelia, Ephraim, Boniface, Constance, Ludmila, and Aislynn. An eleventh great-grandchild, a great-grandson, is expected in December. He is also survived by two sisters, Louise (Rex) Hedding and Pat Slavens.
Memorial contributions are suggested to David’s church, Hope Chapel.
David has been a beloved younger brother and we shared so many happy times together, growing up and as adults. We come from a large family, five boys and two girls and we didn’t have much money but we were rich in relationships with each other. He was 8 years younger than me and I used to baby-sit him, cuddle him in the old rocking chair and help feed him his milk bottle. He had this curly head of hair and I still have pictures (and memories) of playing with him in our mostly dirt covered back yard, all of us barefoot. His older brothers and sister Pat also adored him. He was always so lovable. He grew into a wonderful man, intelligent, accomplished, caring and still so lovable & loving. He married the most wonderful woman, Connie, and they produced a beautiful family: Kristen and Mike, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For years we got together for wonderful family reunions. My husband Rex & I will miss him so very much.
