Bridget Diane Callahan

Bridget Diane Callahan, of De Soto, Kansas, passed away on September 20, 2026. Born November 1, 1955, Bridget lived a life defined not by what she asked of others, but by what she gave to them.

Dedicated, loyal, and selfless, Bridget loved her family and friends above all else. She knew no stranger, and there was always room for one more in her home, at her table, or in her heart. She asked for very little and gave everything she had to the people around her. To know Bridget was to know that you were welcome.

On March 16, 1974, Bridget married James Dennis Callahan, beginning a marriage and a life together that would span more than 52 years. Together they raised three sons, Andrew, Brandon, and Courtney, and built the family that became the center of Bridget’s world.

She was a devoted wife and mother and, eventually, took on one of the roles she cherished most of all: Granny. Bridget was blessed with 14 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters, and she took tremendous joy in watching her family grow.

Whether it was her sons when they were young or her grandchildren years later, Bridget showed her love by being there. If something was important to one of her children or grandchildren, it was important to her. She spent countless hours in the stands at sporting events, in the audience at school musicals, and proudly watching pageants when her granddaughters were young. She wanted to be there for the moments that mattered, big or small, and through the years her family could always count on looking out and finding her there, proudly supporting them.

During her sons’ Cub Scout years, she naturally became a Den Mother, not only to her own boys but to the friends who surrounded them. Caring for people and making them feel as though they belonged simply came naturally to her.

Her home was at its fullest—and Bridget perhaps at her happiest—when it was filled with family and friends. She especially loved Halloween and Christmas and cherished every opportunity the holidays gave her to bring people together. She cooked for them, celebrated with them, laughed with them, and created the kinds of gatherings that became family traditions and, in time, treasured memories. Among those traditions were her famous “Granny chicken and noodles,” a family favorite whose name alone will forever bring memories of her back to the table.

Bridget loved music, especially the Beatles, and she loved to travel. Family road trips were never simply about reaching the destination. She sang, colored, and played games with her grandchildren along the way, turning the miles themselves into memories.

The mountains brought her happiness, but the beach held a particularly special place in her heart. She loved being near the water and, most of all, the peaceful sound of the waves.

She also enjoyed gardening and was an enthusiastic sports fan who loved cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas Jayhawks, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Those who knew Bridget will remember her infectious laugh. It came easily and often, but perhaps never more so than when she was surrounded by family and friends. They will remember her generosity and loyalty, the open door to her home, and the way she made room in her life for others.

Bridget was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Mitchell.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, James Dennis Callahan; her mother, Barbara Mitchell; her sons, Andrew Callahan and his wife, Christin; Brandon Callahan and his wife, Nicole; and Courtney Callahan and his wife, Jennifer; her 14 grandchildren, Jackson, Ethan, Brady, Zachary, Evan, Bailey, Charlotte, Agnes, Lane, Bryce, Taylor, Mikayla, Kaydie, and Calisi; her two great-granddaughters, Ember and Aria; her brothers, Kenneth and John Mitchell and John’s wife, Elaine; and her sister, Karen, and her late husband, Mark; as well as many extended family members and friends who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.

For all the things Bridget loved throughout her life, nothing mattered to her more than the people in it. Her family was not simply part of her life—it was the heart of it. The love she gave so freely will live on in the family she built, the traditions she created, the countless people she welcomed into her home, and the memories carried forward by everyone who loved her.

Services for Bridget will be held Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 409 E. 8th Street, Eudora, Kansas 66025. The Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow Mass at the church cemetery. Following the services, family and friends are invited to an open house at 9814 Pin Oak Circle, De Soto, Kansas 66018.
