Douglas James Wood, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026, after a brief illness. Born on October 15, 1946, in Pigeon, Michigan, Doug’s life was a testament to love, laughter, and dedication.
Doug’s early years were shaped by the sudden loss of his biological parents, Williard and Helen Feekings, and later by the love and support of his adoptive parents, Jim and Wanita Wood. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Richard and Ed Feekings, who he cherished dearly. Doug is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Kathleen; his son, Jason and family, Michelle, Jacob, and Sam; his daughter, Jamie (Farris) and husband, Seth; sisters, Patricia Tunney and Judy Wieneke (Steve); inlaws Ellis and Judy Neill, and Fred Saylor; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Doug graduated from Ainsworth High School in Flint, Michigan in 1964, and pursued further studies at Michigan State University, earning an Associate’s degree. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, 1966-1968, as a cryptologist in the Signal Corp during the Vietnam War.
His professional life was marked by his work ethic and skill as the owner-operator of Doug Wood Trucking. For over thirty years, Doug safely operated his trusty Kenworths, providing for his family, and developing close relationships with other drivers.
On June 12, 1976, Doug married the love of his life, Kathleen, in a beautiful ceremony in Lansing, Michigan. Their marriage spanned over fifty years, during which they raised their two wonderful children. Doug’s eyes would light up with pride whenever he spoke of his children and grandsons, Jacob and Sam, who were the joy of his life.
A man of many talents, Doug was known for his quick wit, infectious humor, and creative storytelling. He was always willing to lend a hand to any endeavor or challenge his friends and family were facing. His interests in sports and current events kept him engaged with the world, and he was always eager to discuss the latest news or his childrens’ accomplishments.
Doug was an active member of the American Legion Post 21 and The Forty and Eight, an invitation-only honor society honoring service members. Through these he was active in charitable causes supporting these organizations. He was also active throughout Boy Scouts of America as a leader and camp master. Doug lovingly restored a 1977 Volkswagen Beetle for Jamie and she enjoyed this throughout her early driving years. Doug was a member of the East 39th Street Community of Christ Church for over forty years.
Interment will take place on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Leavenworth National Cemetery, at 11am. A celebration of life memorial will occur on Saturday, January 9, 2027, at Tim’s Pizza in Independence, Missouri, beginning at noon. All are welcome to join Doug’s family and friends as they gather to celebrate his life, sharing memories filled with love, laughter, and gratitude for the time they had with him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Doug’s memory to the American Legion, honoring his legacy of generosity and kindness (https://mylegion.org/personifyebusiness/Give/Donate-Online/Donate-Now?CashProductId=134419).
Doug’s warmth, humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, knowing he leaves behind a legacy of love that will endure for generations.

Uncle Doug was special, I remember him taking me to classes with him at MSU and he and my dad using me to flush out pheasants while they hunted them, that made me kinda nervous, but after my dad died he stepped up when it was needed always there for the important moments. Love to you all, he will definitely be missed.
