John C. Ruby died January 8, 2008, at the Timberlake Care Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was 88 years old. John was beloved by many Kansas City tennis players as the organizer of the Kansas City Tennis Club, which he devoted his time to after his retirement from the railroad. John was a regular and requested contributor to the K.C. Star Voices section with his own special slant on local and national issues. John was a true citizen participant in utilizing his rights and responsibilities by often writing his elected officials for explanations and to express his concerns. John also loved to share songs and writings he had composed from experiences he had during WWII and his love of the game of tennis. His son, Eric Ruby of Sequim, Wash., his daughter, Gael Ruby of Mt. Shasta, Calif., and a granddaughter and great-granddaughter, survives John. A Celebration of John’s life will be held at the Overland Racquet Club, 6800 W. 91st St., Overland Park, Kan., at 6:15 p.m. on January 13, 2008. Call (913) 491-3146 for directions.
