Helen Byler died peacefully in her home on April 3, 2015.  She was born May 23, 1928 to Edward and Ruth Harrison DenAdel in Bartlesville, OK, where she spent her childhood.  She attended Cottey College and then Oklahoma State University where she met and married William H. Byler on June 3, 1950. They were blessed with two daughters Stephanie and Beth Byler.  Helen found her second career and passion in life, teaching special education and received her Masters Degree from Duquesne University.  She made a difference in the lives of many special children with her insight and compassionate teaching. She passed on to her family her love of music, and played the cello in several quartets and community orchestras.  Helen was a member of PEO and the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, Helen could out-swim and fish anyone else in her family.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of almost 65 years, William H. Byler, daughters, Stephanie Hope (Chris), Beth Jordan (Steve) and her two beloved grandchildren Jessi and Sean Jordan.

Services for Helen will be held April 9th, 2015 at 2 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations are requested to the Heritage Philharmonic of Independence or Cottey College.

    I was surprised and sad when you called to tell me that your mom had passed away, Stephanie. She was vital to the end despite pain and exhaustion. She died exactly the way she wanted to; at home, peacefully, in her sleep.

    Even though Helen and I were sisters in Chapter Kl-PEO, I really didn’t appreciate how very special she had been to others in her life! That’s because of another quality in her personality–humbleness. We will all miss her. I sympathize with her loved ones whose loss is so great.

    What a joy Helen brought into our lives, her intellectual brilliance, her musical talent, and her loving concern for all of us. I have enjoyed being her PEO sister for many years. We will all miss her.
