Phillip Brown

Phillip D. Brown, 63, Lenexa, died June 5, 2015.

Memorial service to be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday June 7 at Unity Church of Overland Park with reception to follow.

Phil was born December 15, 1951. He was the son of Donald and Eleanor Laughlin Brown.  He was born in Clay Center, Kansas and spent his childhood in Raytown, Missouri.  He was a graduate of Raytown South High School, class of 1970. He obtained a Bachelors and Masters of Education at the University of Missouri – Kansas City.  He had a 31 year career as a beloved teacher of fourth and fifth graders at Choteau Elementary School in North Kansas City.  His teaching career at Choteau often spanned multiple generations.  From 2000 through 2002, Phil received the designation of STARR Teacher from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  He served as the Vice President of the North Kansas City National Education Association for four years.  He was also a delegate to the NEA National Representative Assembly for many years.  Following his retirement from NKCSD, Phil joined the Education Department at Rockhurst University.  He served as a visiting professor and later as the Director of Field Experiences, placing, mentoring and supporting student teachers.

On August 7, 1976, Phil married Mary Alice Ozenberger Brown.  Together they raised two wonderful sons, Clay and Wade.  Later in life, Phil married husband, Shawn Kelsey.  Phil and Shawn enjoyed traveling through Europe as well as frequent visits to their vacation home in Fort Lauderdale.  Phil also enjoyed traveling to Berlin, Germany to spend time with his two lovely grandchildren.

Phillip Brown is survived by husband, Shawn of the home; son, Clay, daughter-in-law, Jo, and grandchildren, Ella and Harper of Berlin, Germany; son, Wade, and daughter-in-law, Sarah, of Kansas City; brother, Al Brown, of Raytown; sister, Sue Brown, and brother-in-law, Mark Ackerman of Springfield, Missouri.  He is a gracious, kind and noble soul whose legacy is reflected in his family and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Raytown Emergency Assistance Program (REAP) and Unity Church of Overland Park.

    We were so sorry to learn of the loss of Phil. Our connection through Wade and Brandt as well as knowing him as a fellow NKC teacher help us know what a wonderful individual he was and he will be missed. Sympathies to everyone from the Leitzes.

    Shawn, I am so sorry I didn’t get by to see Phil when he was sick! I miss him, too. I saw your post about Phil loving to go for walks at the lake. Sounds wonderful! He will be missed by many people, I’m sure. My condolences to you and his family!

    Mr. Brown was a wonderful teacher and was a;ways there for his students. I loved being in his class and he always made learning fun.
    My children also hd the priveledge to have been taught by Mr. Brown when he would sub at Chouteau. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayerss go out to the family.

    I’m so sorry to hear of Doctor Brown’s passing. I had the great pleasure of being one of his mentees during the fall 2013 student teaching at Rockhurst. He was a wonderful man and a great teacher. He wi be missed. So sorry for your loss.

    I’m so sorry to hear about Mr. Brown’s passing. He was my advisor while student teaching and I always enjoyed talking with him about classroom experiences – he will be missed by many!
