James “Jim” Tierney Costain, 72 of Corneilus, North Carolina and recently with family in Olathe, Kansas passed away at home with his family by his side on October 23rd, 2017 after he lost his battle with cancer. A memorial gathering will be held 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Saturday, November 11th, 2017 at Heartland Cremation & Burial Society, 6113 Blue Ridge Blvd, Raytown, Missouri 64133.
He was born March 4, 1945 in Newark, New Jersey and grew up in Cornwall, New York and Pryor, Oklahoma. Jim ran high school track, played football and basketball at Pryor High School in Pryor, Oklahoma. He was a foreign exchange student in the Philippines the summer before his Senior year in 1962 and graduated in 1963 from Pryor High School.
Jim attended OSU from 1963-1965. While attending there met Mary “Jeannette” Lieber, married and had two sons together, Patrick and James. Divorced in 1978. He enlisted in the Navy in Sept 1965 – 1971, and earned the National Defense Service Medal. Jim served in Beeville, Texas as a Link Trainer for the F-9 Jet.
After the military he went back to OSU Extension in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on the GI Bill. He worked there during his school career in the computer science department. Jim also taught night classes at the OSU Extension. He then went onto Oklahoma City University to complete his B.A.. He began a 30 plus year career in the banking Industry, in computer programming and project management, getting his start at Liberty National Bank in Oklahoma City and eventually moved to North Carolina working for First Union, Wachovia and Wells Fargo from which he retired from 2011.
Jim will be remembered for being a guitar player who loved many different genres of music, for his love for his boat and tootling around Lake Norman, family, shopping, watching his favorite soccer team Manchester United play and for anything his grandkids played in. Teammates on his Granddaughter Courtney’s soccer teams all knew him as Papa Costain and loved his cheering for them!!! He will be greatly missed!
He is preceded in death by; parents, Arthur Howard Costain II & Marguerite “Peg” Leone Kinder Costain; older sister, Julie Costain.
Survivors include; son and daughter-in-law, Patrick Todd & Kristie Costain and their two children, Joshua and John; son and daughter-in-law, James “Jim” Tierney & Elizabeth Costain and their four children, Brittney, Tierney, Anthony and Courtney; brother and sister-in-law, Art & Carol Costain and their children, Jennifer, Phil and Rebecca and their families.
Memorial suggestions- live life like he did with a smile everyday and trying his hardest to make it a great day for all those that were around him.
Best Papa Costain! We will miss your smile, love and all your support! See you in Paradise or Heaven one day soon, we can finish a game of African Gin and catch up. Love you Dad!! You were a blessing, Thank you for all you did for us.

Prayers to the family.
I did not have the opportunity to know Jim well, but our “over the back fence” visits this past summer showed him to be a very nice gentleman. He enjoyed watching my Hummingbirds and all the colorful Finches at my feeders. I know he has the peace he deserves.

Papa Costain was truly one of the kindest person I have known. He always had a great big smile when we would see him. I watched how he loved his family with all of his heart. It was a blessing to see. We are honored to have known this wonderful Papa!
While I only recently found out that you’ve left us, Jim, I want you to know you were the best boss I reported to throughout my career in banking. You would listen whenever something was bothering me and never brushed me off because you were too busy. I especially thank you for your efforts to promote me to vice president. Love the pics you shared of your flower gardens. Your cone flowers were always beautiful! I am so happy that our paths crossed on this earth and, hopefully, they’ll cross again on the other side.
