June Shockey, 82, passed away Sunday, November 29 at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Missouri, from post-surgical complications. The family plans a cremation followed by private burial service. A public memorial service was conducted virtually on Saturday, December 12, 2020. June was born and raised in Mercer, Missouri, as the 12th of 13 children. She often regaled her sons and grandsons with great stories of humor, hardship, love and laughter growing up in her very-big family in a very-small town. She talked about great memories like playing on her school basketball teams, and hard times like her family’s struggles following a devastating home fire. Most of all she told wonderful stories of growing up playing, fighting and laughing with her siblings.
After graduating from high school June headed for bigger cities to live and work, eventually ending up in Kansas City, Missouri, where she would live for the rest of her life. In those early years she worked at a large downtown bank, where she took pride in her work and the responsibility she was given. Along the way she met and married Bill Shockey, and she gave birth to her three sons – Gary, Michael and James.
June was a devoted mother to her boys. She was especially always so proud and encouraging of her sons’ many creative musical and artistic interests and endeavors. She enjoyed driveway basketball games and long walks with them. She lived with their loud music and louder wrestling matches. Most importantly, she was the rock they always knew they could count on, no matter what.
During the years while she was raising her young family, June opened her own in-home daycare business, and she would continue to run it for more than 50 years, until the time of her passing. She took great pride in having cared for multiple generations of kids for several families.
June was eternally grateful for her three grandsons, Bryan, Jason and Dylan, whom she adored. There was no game that was too crazy, no bedtime too late, no toy too expensive, no snack off limits, and no shortage of pizza or chocolate chip cookies. She loved every single minute she spent with them throughout their childhoods, and she was tremendously proud of the young men they have become.
The constant, enduring thread throughout June’s life was her faith in her Lord. She was a woman of deep Christian belief, and all who knew her saw that she genuinely lived her faith daily, with a true servant’s heart. June had so much love to give – for her own family, for her daycare families, for her church family, for her community. She was very active in her church over the years, participating in many various ministries working with children, helping the homeless and more. She particularly enjoyed sharing her love of flowers by tending her church’s flower gardens.
June’s loving spirit and abiding faith shown through in everything she did. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
June was preceded in death by her parents, Ned Freeland Lane and Jessie Fern Lane; by siblings Harold, Kate, Herb, Bill, Jim, Janet and Frank; and by her former husband and the father of her children, Billie Dean Shockey. June is survived by her three dearly loved sons: Gary Dean Shockey, Michael Bryan Shockey and wife Cammy, and James David Shockey; by three treasured grandsons: Bryan Lyle Shockey, Jason Dean Shockey and Dylan Campbell Shockey; by her beloved siblings: Ann Young, Mary Arnold, Frances Wahl and husband Harley, Bob Lane, Joe Lane and wife Linda; and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and more extended family.

The Bill lane family will deeply miss Junie. She loved the Lord with all her heart. She loved Family, friends, all people. Junie leaves an amazing legacy. She was truly a Proverb 31 Woman of God. We have been privileged to know and love this incredible lady. We are sad that Junie is gone but excited she is in heaven for eternity. 🙂
I only met June a handful of times when I was in town visiting my grandson, and I would drop him off or pick him up from her house. In just those short times that we chatted and laughed, I could see that she was a warm, funny, energetic woman, and my grandson was very lucky to have her in his life. You will be missed, June. My condolences to your family.

Love & condolences for the Shockley men/boys & the rest of the family! My granddaughter Olivia was so comfortable in June’s care & enjoyed playing with Gary. She will be missed by many children!!
My condolences to the Shockey family. June was such a huge part in my children’s lives , she will forever be missed.. She was the best babysitter/angel anyone could ask for. I am thankful to have had her in our lives. Till we meet again.
Can’t even describe what a huge hole losing Junie leaves in my heart. She was one of the sweetest, most kind and generous people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing in my lifetime. My mother was Junie’s friend when she first came to Kansas City snd worked at the bank and I grew up knowing her and her boys. I became a mother and Junie would go on to watch my kids and most recently- my granddaughter Presley.
She took care of them like they were her very own kids- buying them special things and like loving them like family.
Our hearts are hurting right now, but we know that she is at peace with The Lord and that she will forever be our Guardian Angel. I learned so much about flowers from June- and I had so many great talks with her. I will miss that. Prayers to Mike and Gary… and Cammy- and her grandsons… we will be thinking about all of you during the holidays. Much love-

My family and I are deeply saddened to hear about Mrs. Shockey. Mrs Shockey was a true diamond and I am blessed to have known her. I have been Mrs. Shockey’s neighbor for 17 years and she could never imagine what she meant me. I saw this woman get up every day I saw her working hard everyday and it was a true inspiration. She was the type of woman that made the best of what she had and if she didn’t have she would find a way to get it. A lot of people don’t get their shine in life or recognition but I was blessed to watch this woman shine everyday. Mrs. Shockey was funny, she was smart, she was beautiful, she was sweet, loving, caring, feisty, but most of all she was funny. She took pride in her home and her surroundings. Mrs. Shockey was a woman who loved her family very dearly I would watch as her grandchildren came over and I could see her smiling, laughing, gleaming with joy and love. She is a true Angel and and has helped so many people in this community and has mark the minds of many children with her love and caring. Mrs Shockey was a family loving good reliable solid person a pillar in this community long before I came along. I am thankful to have known her watch her family grow and watch her give her love for so many years. My heart just dropped when I saw that her snow had not been shoveled I knew something was not right. I didn’t know exactly know when she passed until later but I was thankful that God gave me a chance to speak with her at the mailbox with my new baby a few weeks earlier and she said to me looking at my baby saying love will bring you through I laughed and said yes it will. Mrs. Shockey was a true Angel and she was called home I did not know her time of departure but I know they did not miss her celebration in heaven she is a great woman and she will be deeply missed my deepest condolences to the family.
