Mercedes Summer Chavez, 43, beloved daughter of Gene and Linda (Murphy) Chavez, passed away at her home in Merriam, Kansas on June 17, 2022. Mercedes was born on September 1, 1978 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and was a graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School.
Mercedes was kind, gentle, and would help friends in need if she could. Her beautiful smile, sparkling laugh and great sense of humor will remain forever in our hearts. Her hugs were heartfelt and amazing.
Mercedes had a special fondness for shelter dogs and stray cats and had adopted a few over the years. Grover was her special adoptee and he misses her greatly. She was a voracious reader from a very early age and could always be found with a book in her hand, often ones she had read more than a few times. She had a great love of music of all genres and possessed a large collection of her favorite CDs. She loved twinkling lights, handheld fans, glamour and glitter. Mercedes was passionate about all things Dr. Who and attended many Comic-Con events. She loved movies and always sat through all the credits at the end of the film as she felt it only right to acknowledge all workers.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her brother, Spencer Chavez; grandparents Roy, Sr. and Maxine Murphy, Joann Comer and Clarence Chavez; uncles Roy Murphy, Jr., Roy Gene Murphy, Jerry Olson, and Louis Chavez; Aunts Joanie Chavez, Barb Liberty, and Shirley Brown. She is survived by her Aunts Harriett (Stan) Curtis, Patricia Murphy, Sharon (Raphael) Darveaux, Carol Olson, Teri (Dave) McClain, Denise Chavez, and Vesta Cochran; Uncles Vince (Robin) Chavez, Stan Chavez, and Don (Pat) Murphy, and many cousins.
A private memorial service will be held for Mercedes at a later date.
