Dennis Person Jr. of Kansas City, MO, unexpectedly passed away on November 16, 2022.
He was born on January 12,1949 to Dennis Person, Sr, and Laverne (Cummings)Person in Fort Scott, Kansas. After graduating from Fort Scott High School, he attended Fort Scott Community College then Pittsburgh State University where he was a member of both school’s basketball programs.
He graduated with a Social Work degree and moved to the Kansas City area. He worked for Jackson County Family court for 31 years. He was a Social Worker at McCune School for Boys for 20 years and the remainder of his career he held multiple positions throughout the court. He retired in 2004. He poured his heart into his work and all the people he worked with absolutely admired him. He had a tone and a way of speaking to the youth that made them feel loved, safe, and heard. He was well respected by his co-workers and the youths he encountered during his career.
In his spare time, Dennis enjoyed fishing, watching his beloved Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks, traveling with his wife in their RV and spending time with his children and his grandson Ian offering advice and sharing his wisdom. He also spent hours in his garden, tinkering in his workshop and taking care of any animal that was lucky enough to visit his backyard.
He is survived by his mother (Laverne Person), Wife (Beverly Albertson), Sisters, Janice Greene (Arthur), Linda Wilson (Larry), Holly Rogers (Richard) and Cindy Becker (Brent). All his children Desmond Cobb (Kimberly), Dennie Ann Young-Nickles (John), Leah Person, and Dennis Person III.
Dad never liked to be the center of attention and per his wishes there will be no services. In lieu of cards and flowers, the family suggests donating to your local animal shelter.
We will all miss him more than words can say!!
I was sorry to read of Dennis’s passing. I worked with him at McCune School for Boys back in the early 80’s. He was a calming presence in the cottages and a great role model for the residents. I enjoyed working with him and playing the occasional game of Spades.
