Nancy Ann Coleman Peavler-Barton was born October 9,1940 to Lola and Joseph Coleman in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. She passed from this life on May 19, 2023 in Columbia, Missouri.
She received her teacher’s degree from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and a Master’s degree in math from Kansas State University. She married Tommy Joe Peavler December 17,1960 and they had three children. They moved to Waverly, Kansas in 1966 where she taught high school math and French until 1985. She then moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma where she worked as a teacher advocate for the Oklahoma Education Association until retirement. She also had a part time job for several years as a DJ at a country radio station. She married Jeffrey Barton in 2011.
She was predeceased by her son Tim Peavler and granddaughter Tori Peavler. She is survived by her sister, Jody Garland of Corsicana, Texas, son Tom Peavler II (Jean Meyer) of Thayer, Missouri, daughter Tricia Peavler of Alexandria, Virginia, daughter-in-law Susan Peavler of Overland Park, Kansas, four grandchildren, April, Shawn, and Trey Peavler and Anna Cummings, and four great grandchildren, Marcellus, Olivia and Egypt Richard and Christopher Cummings.
Nancy was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ardmore. She loved math and puzzles of all kinds, tutoring her great granddaughter in geometry over Facetime in recent years and playing Wordle online up until her last weeks. She was a very creative person, writing poetry, painting watercolors, photographing school events, making handcrafted greeting cards for her family and church, and she was an excellent bridge player. Nancy loved traveling and visited 48 of the 50 states as well as Europe and Africa. She was a terrific cook, an avid reader, and a wonderful mom who will be greatly missed.
I have kept every cars she ever made for me and the lovely painting of carnations she gave me for my birthday in 2020. She was a true friend and an amazing woman. I will miss loving friendship and will be keeping all of you in my thoughts.
As a retired teacher of E flush and journalism, I should certainly proofread my remarks bexfore hitting send. I kept her gorgeous cards not “cars.”
I am lucky to have known Nancy through her daughter Tricia. She joined our Zoom exercise group on Sundays that we began during Covid shutdowns. She always provided humor to our workouts. I know Tricia inherited her wit. I will miss her. I’m sure she was a great teacher and advocate for teachers. I did not know she taught French. I would have tried some of my old HS French on her during our classes. She probably was lucky I did not know. But I did know she had been a DJ, which was very cool. Love you Nancy, and hope you are catching up with your son Tim and other loved ones who preceded you in Heaven.
Tom and Tricia…..I have so many fond memories of your Mom and Dad. I loved having them as teachers but also having them around with all of us kids in Jr High to High School.
I’ve remembered so many fun times. Sending you both big hugs……
