Becoming a Tree: The New Trend in Eco-Friendly Cremation
More and more families are turning to cremation as a low-cost alternative to the high prices of traditional funerals. But there is a new trend growing, literally, when it comes to eco-friendly cremation: biodegradable urns that allow individuals to become a tree after they die.
This process allows family members to mix the cremated remains of their loved ones in a biodegradable container with a mixture of coconut shell, compacted peat, and cellulose. A seed is then added to the remains and allowed to germinate into whatever type of tree or plant you select. The cremated remains act as nutrients with their abundance of phosphorus and allow the seed to grow.
First popularized in Europe, the idea has started to make its way to the United States as more people try green cremation as an alternative to traditional cremation or expensive caskets that take up space in a cemetery. Why not try an earth friendly idea that allows your loved one a way of returning to the earth and living on long after they’re gone?
