Calvin Dale Ahlbrandt, 71, of Columbia died at home on May 2, 2012. A celebration of his life will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at the Donald W. Reynolds Alumni Center on the University of Missouri campus. Calvin was born August 13, 1940 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Herman and Catherine (Ehrlich) Ahlbrandt. He was raised in Veteran, Wyoming where his parents homesteaded. He graduated from Veteran High School in 1958 and received his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Wyoming in 1962. He married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Keller, on December 31, 1961. Together they moved to Norman, Oklahoma where Calvin received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Oklahoma in 1968. He spent his entire academic career as a mathematics professor and researcher at the University of Missouri, beginning in 1968 and retiring in 2001. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed sharing this passion with others.
Calvin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Ahlbrandt; three children, Robert Ahlbrandt (Jayne) of Vernon Hills, Illinois, William Ahlbrandt (Shannon) of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Michael Ahlbrandt (Karen) of Arlington, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Thomas Ahlbrandt of Kansas City, Missouri, Joseph Ahlbrandt of Columbia, Alexander and Adrian Ahlbrandt of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Blake and Abbie Ahlbrandt of Arlington, Tennessee; a sister, Helen Fry of Torrington, Wyoming and brother, Roland Ahlbrandt of Riverton, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow Ahlbrandt and Arthur Ahlbrandt. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Friends of the Columbia Public Library, P.O. Box 1267, Columbia, MO 65205-1267 or the Central Missouri Humane Society, 616 Big Bear Blvd., Columbia, MO 65202.

My thoughts are with you, I’m sorry to hear about Calvin’s death. I looked up to Calvin at UMC as an adviser and he helped me discover an interest in Math Sciences. Calvin was able to expose the beauty of math in his courses and work and I’m always very inspired by Calvin.
