Charles Eric Ward, age 87, passed away April 15, 2005. A private memorial service will be held Monday, April 18, 2005, at 3 p.m., at the Raytown Christian Church. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Martha Jane (Choate) Ward of the home; daughters, Mary Elizabeth Alexander of Lincroft, New Jersey, Martha Elaine Ward of Independence, MO, and Sally Sue Ward of Lee’s Summit, MO; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was born March 25, 1918, in Gilbert, Louisiana, in Franklin Parish. He is preceded in death by two brothers; five sisters; and 11 half-brothers and sister. Charles attended Louisiana State University for two years, then had to leave to help his family out. He owned and operated a grocery store in Gilbert for two years, before being drafted into the Army. He fought in World War II as a pilot for the Army Air Corps and flew in the Pacific. After returning from overseas, he joined a sister and brother-in-law in Kansas City, MO, and built houses. He became a licensed real estate broker and sold houses. He then served 25 years with the FHA as a field appraiser and also at the downtown office on the review desk before he retired in 1985. Charles was an avid hunter who loved his companion field dogs. He was an avid fisherman and gardener and supplied friends and family with the bounty from his fishing trips and his garden. He was also a great backyard patio cooker and a huge Chiefs fan. His love for his family was always first and he will be missed tremendously. We are comforted knowing that he is in a better place today and forever. The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to Powell Gardens Heartland Garden.
