Colene Cords

Colene Cords was a loving wife and a wonderful, adoring mother. She was born in El Dorado, KS. After facing a long battle with cancer, she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her husband and two daughters on April 20, 2021 at the young age of 51.

Colene grew up in a very loving family. Her mom and dad were always involved in the many sporting activities she and her three older brothers participated in. Colene graduated from The University of Kansas with a degree in Textile Design. She had a successful career as a Graphic Designer and Creative Director for JP Morgan and Waddell and Reed. She was married to her husband, Bart, in 1998 and moved to Olathe, KS where they had two beautiful daughters. Colene was such a great mom, always so creative and witty. She loved doing crafts with her girls or painting their nails. She enjoyed family trips to the beach and spending time with friends. She was a good listener and quick with encouraging advice. She simply had a special way of making you feel good.

Colene will be missed terribly by her friends and family. However, we can take comfort knowing she is no longer in pain and is in such a better place. Her battle with cancer was so long and hard on her, but also filled with constant love and support from her friends and family. Please remember and take comfort in the fact that this awful disease can never take away all the memories we made with Colene and we will always carry those in our hearts.

Colene was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Aleta Long, and her brother Bryan. She is survived by her husband Bart, daughters Emily and Maddy, brothers Ray (Elaine) and Stephen as well as 3 nieces.

A service celebrating her life will be held on May 10th at Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, Kansas at 4:00 p.m. in Wesley Chapel. Masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Donations in her memory can be made to The University of Kansas Cancer Center at kucancercenter.org

I’ll remember Colene’s smile and infectious laugh. She always lit up the room when she walked in and helped to turn tense situations into comedic moments. She just had a special way about her. Praying for her family.

I remember very fondly sitting next to Colene on the sideline of a soccer game watching our Maddie’s play center back together. Colene was someone I really enjoyed getting to know, and she was so sincere. Even when she was battling cancer, she would always wish me a Happy Birthday, and reply to my posts. She has raised 2 beautiful daughters, and I feel blessed to have known her.
