David Alan Mattonen

David Alan Mattonen, age 67, of Blue Springs, Missouri was called home to be with the Lord on March 29, 2025 at Ignite Medical Resorts – St. Mary’s.

David was born the eldest of four children on August 23, 1957 in Virginia, Minnesota to Jack(ie) Marvin Mattonen and Wilma Ruth Boyer. He was preceded in death by his father and beloved chow chow dog, Gracie. He is survived by his mother, sisters Donna Mattonen, Diane (Gregg) Kristian, and brother Donald (Joy LaMourea) Mattonen; daughters Stephanie (Nate) Nemitz, Anna (Christian) Madrigal, and Julia Mattonen; granddaughter Caitlin Kling and grandsons Jack Nemitz, Graham Gordon, and Cameron Madrigal.

David grew up in both the Raytown community of Kansas City, Missouri and Embarrass, Minnesota. He attended elementary school in Buckner and Harrisonville, MO; Pittman Hills Junior High in Raytown, MO; Raytown Senior High School, and graduated from Tri-City Baptist School in Kansas City. Those who knew him as a youngster remember him being talented in baseball, often with his ear to a small radio listening to the Minnesota Twins and memorizing player stats. He also dabbled in theatre, chorus, and student council during his school years.

At age 10, David accepted the Lord Jesus into his heart at a Billy Graham crusade in Kansas City. After going to the front of the service, he was separated from his family and put on a bus back to Harrisonville. He said he wasn’t afraid, because he was basking in the glory of being saved.

While he only attended a year or so of formal college, David was a natural jack-of-all-trades. Whether it was working in radio, finance, or sales, he was always about the hustle. His mind was analytical, his conversation skills were endless, and his faith was evangelical, embodying a value of human fellowship and a gift for prophecy. His restlessness led him on many adventures, including moving to Orlando to briefly pursue a golf career, another sport he loved and excelled in. He also settled for nearly 13 years in the Springfield, Missouri area where his youngest daughters went to high school.

In 2016, David suffered a series of nearly fifty mini-strokes, rendering a prognosis of 20% chance of survival. He went on to live nearly nine more years to see the birth of two grandsons, the evolution of his youngest daughter, and to continue to cause trouble and make an impact on everyone around him in the various long-term care facilities he called home. His raucous laughter and trouble-making spirit cemented him as a character in the lives of the generous and patient caregivers who surrounded him in his final chapters. You could not ignore Davey Mattonen – a genuine scoundrel with charisma and heart for miles. Even with a disability, David continued to be a class-clown, a socializer, and a believer, often saying he prayed for his family all throughout the night.

David will be memorialized on Saturday, July 26, 2025 with a burial of ashes at 1pm in South Sandy Cemetery, Britt, MN, followed by a celebration at Pike Town Office in Embarrass, Minnesota from 2 to 4pm. Friends and family are invited to wear Hawaiian shirts or Kansas City Chiefs gear for Dave, an avid life-long fan of the team.
