Deloris (Dee) Maurine Berning Rice

Deloris (Dee) Maurine Berning Rice, 83 years old of Norborne, MO passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit, MO on Monday, March 28th.

She attended the Lutheran Elementary School in Norborne for grades 5-8 and then went on to Norborne High School where she graduated in 1956. Dee got her first job after graduation at BMA in Kansas City, MO. She married Joe L Rice of Carrollton, MO in 1961 after they met through mutual hometown friends and had two daughters. She was a stay-at-home mom taking care of the house and all of the details until she returned to work part time at MacKay Drugs and eventually NCM of Overland Park, KS as well as KCTA as a bookkeeper where she retired in 2001. Joe and Deloris celebrated their 60th anniversary in September.

Dee was an involved member of Peace Lutheran Church in Kansas City where she met many of her closest friends. She served in many ways at Peace and was involved in LWML and Sewing Bee where she used her love of sewing to create quilts for the homeless, women’s shelters and other organizations around the city. She loved to play Bridge and would spend many hours solving crossword and sudoku puzzles, and solitaire on the family room floor. She loved to sew and made her girls many matching outfits for Christmas, weddings and many other holidays, dances, weddings and proms. The KC Royals also held a special place in her heart. She hardly ever missed a game and definitely loved her Chiefs, too! She was an active member of Red Hats and wore her hat and purple proudly. Dee made sure everyone was taken care of and included. We will miss her big smile dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Melba (Hart) Berning, her brothers James D Berning and his wife Betty, Herbert Gene Berning, and Wilburt Glen Berning.

She is survived by her loving husband Joe, brother Gerald Berning and wife Marian (Seward) of Richmond, MO, daughters Jodi Farr of Olathe, KS and her husband Timothy, Sherri Taylor of Palm Harbor, FL and her husband Kevin, and her four grandchildren: Jordyn Farr, Noah Taylor, Seth Farr, and Grayson Taylor.

Though Dee will be dearly missed, we are comforted in knowing she has gone on to join her loved ones and friends in Heaven with our Lord and Savior.

Following the funeral service Deloris will be laid to rest at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Norborne, MO at 2:30 pm.

Flowers and memorial contributions may be sent to Peace Lutheran Church, 8240 Blue Ridge Blvd, KC, MO.
