Dylan Michael Guffey

Dylan Michael Guffey passed away on April 13th, 2020. He was born on August 24th, 2019 with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. He spent his short time with us at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. He was given the incredibly selfless gift of a donor heart on February 8th, 2020. The surgery was a success, however, other complications led to a stroke from which he did not recover. Dylan intended to donate his organs to the Midwest Transplant Network, in order to pay forward the gift he was given. His condition did not allow for successful donation, but his intent was recognized by the network.

Dylan was the son of Sean and Lindsay Guffey of Clive, Iowa.

He is survived by his brother Liam.

His grandparents are Darren and Roxanne Whitmore of Perry, Iowa and Mick and Jean Guffey of Watertown, South Dakota. He is also survived by his two aunts, his uncle, and his maternal great grandmother.

Due to the current social conditions caused by the coronavirus, a memorial and celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers we would be pleased to have you donate to Children’s Mercy Kansas City listing Dylan Michael Guffey as the Honoree.

If you choose to supply notification, the family’s address is:

4413 NW 164th St
Clive Iowa 50325

Donations in memory of Dylan can be made to Children’s Mercy, Kansas City.

A Father’s Message to his Dying Infant Son

Warrior,

You have been and always will be my purest form of inspiration. You taught me lessons in perspective. You taught me new depths of strength and courage. You led me to connect in a new, beautiful, and deeper way to your mother and brother. You stretched our family fibers leading to immeasurable growth. Love was always plentiful in our family, but your contributions were unique and powerful.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be your dad, and for all the lessons you have taught. Your short time with me has had the most profound impact on my life. I will love you eternally.

Forever in my heart Dylan Michael,

Your loving father

    Sean, Lindsay, Liam:
Words can’t express how heartbroken we all are and share with you right now. The words used in his obituary and in the message to Dylan were inspirational and most powerful. Dylan made great impact on your family unit, but his reach was long. We all learned and that learning changed our family in a positive way. Dylan the warrior. We think that is just perfect. Thinking of you and praying for peace during this incredibly difficult time.

I had the privilege of getting to know Dylan via his grandmother, Roxanne, with whom I work at Perry High School. Through her Facebook posts, Dylan always appeared to be a sweet & smiley child with a caring & loving family. I have only seen strength & never- ending devotion & hope from those in Dylan’s life, so I truly wish to convey my condolences to you! He was a special angel & although he was only with you a short time, he brought joy & happiness to those around him! May peace be with you & your your family always.
