Floyd E. Doubleday III

Floyd E. Doubleday, III, 95, of Kansas City, Mo., died on May 11, at home with his family. He was born May 8, 1912, in Pittsburg, Kan., the son of Floyd E., Jr. and Alice Wilhelmi Doubleday. His namesake grandfather had moved from the Finger Lakes area of New York to Kansas in 1876 where he managed and eventually owned coal mining operations. He grew up in Ft. Scott, Kan. His parents moved the family to Kansas City, Mo., in 1927, where he attended Southwest High School. He attended Kansas University and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity for over 75 years. He enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor. Following World War II, he, his father and brother, Charles, operated the Doubleday Heating Company. In 1954, they started a related wholesale business, Furnace Supply Company, which Floyd managed until 1993. He and his late wife, Janet, married at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in 1942, and were active members there throughout their lives. Over the years, he taught Sunday school, served on the vestry and chaired the church’s Boy Scout committee. He was a past Post Commander of the Heart of American Legion post #135, a member of NHAW Wholesalers Association and ASHRAE. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2004, his daughter Carol Sue, and his brothers Charles and Max. Survivors include an older sister, Alice Rhoades of Medford, Ore., his children and their spouses: Joan Watt, Kansas City, Mo., Michael Doubleday, Arlington, Va., Stephen and Michele Doubleday, San Antonio, Texas, Marcia and Anthony Seheult, Tampa, Fla., and Pamela and Thomas “Buzz” Willard, Mission Hills, Kan. Also surviving are his 11 grandchildren and their spouses: Jeffrey and Shannon Watt, Lee’s Summit, Mo., and their sons Taylor, Chase, Sawyer and Zayden; Joseph and Jill Watt, Fairway, Kan., and their sons Jacob, Joel, and Jonah; Jennifer and Dennis Shaw, Cave Creek, Ariz., and their daughters Elena and Courtney; Allison and Kevin Cloud, Olathe, Kan., and their sons Benjamin, Samuel and Andrew; Adam Doubleday, San Antonio, Texas; Ashley Doubleday, San Antonio, Texas, and her son Alex; Joseph and Kelly Seheult, San Antonio, Texas, and their daughters Lauren and Erinn; Nicole and Tony Lodato, Tampa, Fla., and their daughters Caitlyn, Isabella, and Ava; Analisa and Mark Whiteside, Tampa, Fla.; Carrie and Jim Pasquarella, Norristown, Pa.; and Julia Willard, Paris, Fr. He was looking forward to the birth of twin great grandchildren in December. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Kansas City, Mo., on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at 1 p.m., with a reception following in the Garden Room. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

    I am saddend to find Mr. Doubleday passed away. We are the current owners of the home he was raised at in Fort Scott. We did speak with him a couple of years ago, and we did not get the chance to personally meet with him. Our thoughts to his family.
