It is with great sorrow that the family of Genie (Hodes) McCowen announce her passing on April 15, 2018 after a lengthy illness. She was born on April 11, 1939 at home in Kansas City, MO to Katherine Rose and Herman J. Hodes, the 7th of 9 children. She attended Visitation Grade School and graduated from St. Theresa’s Academy in Kansas City, Missouri and attended Loretto Heights in Denver, Colorado. She met and married her high school sweetheart H Patrick McCowen and they had 5 beautiful children. She was a gentle, loving, and devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother known as Namaw and Mama Genie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters; Mary Louise Growney and Margie Donohue and brother Bob Hodes. She leaves her loving husband Pat, son Patrick William, daughters; Diane Kusman, Mariane Watkins Nelson (Paul), Carrie Kine (Rich), and Katie Orscheln Owens (Chuck). She also leaves 10 grandchildren, Jason, Lisa (Harrison), Emily, Christie (Derrick), Katy (Derek), Riley, Ryan, Michael, Ashley, Alex, 2 great grandchildren, Easton and Ella Kate. She also leaves sisters; Karosie Ismert, Betty Ismert, Martha Hodes and brothers Bill and Steve Hodes.
Genie would say that her greatest accomplishment was her marriage of 60 years and her 5 children. She was a friend to everyone. Genie is most remembered for her contagious laugh and love for the people around her. She was a quiet and selfless servant to her family and devoted to her Catholic faith. She had a lifelong circle of friends who were loyal to the end including; Ann McShane, Arden Weiss, Loretta McCarthy, Judi Scanlan and many others. After her children were raised, Genie enjoyed working in retail and eventually obtained her Real Estate license. She enjoyed many trips to Ireland with Pat and made countless memories with family and friends at their weekend home at the Lake of the Ozark’s.
Visitation will be from 9-10:30am on April 18, 2018 followed by the Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial all at Cure’ of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Rd, Leawood, Kansas. The family suggests donations to Sisters Servants of Mary, Cure’ of Ars Catholic Church or Bishop Miege High School.
Dear Pat,
We are so sorry to hear of Genie’s passing. You and she were on such a long road together! We wish we could be there (in person) with you for her Visitation and Burial Mass but we will be with another family member supporting her as she has surgery on April 18th. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I love all you McCowan’s! Genie was my BEAUTIFUL AUNT!
God Bless her soul and grant peace to all of you!
I share in your great sorrow on the 15th of April, as it was that day also, some nine years prior that Christ welcomed my truly beloved, Evelyn, into her eternal home. I trust that she was among those who welcomed Genie to her glorious home in heaven along with The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. To Pat . . . we certainly now share a newly founded bond beyond our friendship in that we can grieve and celebrate the goodness of our loved ones now in the arms of their creator. I accept that responsibility graciously. And to the McCowens’ son and daughters, grandchildren, you have been blessed with wonderful grandparents . . .from which to model your lives. May Almighty God be with you as you go forth to serve mankind in your that tradition.
Dear Pat and Family
Noel and I wish to send our deepest sympathy on Genie’s passing. She was always highly thought of in Gortadoo, Co Kerry Ireland – a true lady. What a blessing for you both to have shared so many long and very happy years together. As they say in Gaelic – ‘ní imithe uait ach romhat’ – she has not left you but gone before you. You are in our thoughts and prayers
Kathleen and Noel
