George S. Mitre

George S. Mitre, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 28, 2026, passing away peacefully at his home in Independence, Missouri.

Born on February 16, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, to Santos and Alice Mitre, George led a life characterized by service, dedication, and deep faith. Shortly after his high school graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. He dedicated 22 years to active duty military service before transitioning to a successful civilian career in the aerospace industry, where he ultimately retired from Lockheed Skunk Works in 2002.

A devoted born-again Christian, George’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a faithful and active member of Grace Baptist Church in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where he found great joy and spiritual fellowship.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Santos and Alice; his siblings; his first wife, Lucy; and his son, Jeffery.

His legacy of love lives on in the family he leaves behind. He is survived by his beloved spouse, Merry Sue Mitre; his sons, Eric Mitre, Nathan Mitre, and Joel Mitre; his daughters-in-law, Jackie, Cheri and Glenna Mitre; his step-son, Ryan Lacey; and his step-daughter, Brooke Lacey. George also leaves behind a proud generation of grandchildren who will cherish his memory: grandsons Jay Mitre, Clay Mitre, Broden Durst and Wyatt Lacey; and granddaughters Hannah Bernal, Carrina Mitre, Tori Marunde-Van Wig, Katie Mitre, Jordan Lacey and Devin Lacey.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate George’s life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 850 MO-150, Lee’s Summit, MO.

I remember well mtg Mr George at Seagrove BC and his cardiac distress issue. Was grateful God had great people in place. Over the years I asked about him many times through Joel. I mostly remember Mr Mitre’s faith in Jesus Christ was very evident. His faith has now ended in sight.

There are some losses that seem to touch our very souls. George was one of the finest man I have ever met in my life! His wisdom and Fatherly advise was instrumental in my formative years! I cherished the time I got to spend time with him and Lucy. At the time they never knew how important they were in my life because I ALWAYS KNEW that their house was a safe haven for me! Jeff was my best friend and I look forward to seeing all 3 of them in the future. I still have a recording from a message that he left on my phone from probably 20 years ago where he lovingly refers to me as a “Bobehead”, and a “Kahnuclehead” i know you are home George but somehow the world seems a little dimmer. And Eric, Nathan and Joel, I love you guys and pray that this message finds you doing well!

We met Mr. Mitre when his son Joel retired from the Air Force. We know that Joel was devoted to his Father and truly appreciate his devotion to him, fondly, JoAnne and Ken Nichols
