1917-2008 Irene Cornelius, 90, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 19th at John Knox Village Care Center. Born, Henrietta Irene Belt, on August 4, 1917, in Kansas City, she was the eldest daughter of Thelma and Charles Belt. Irene was married to Ralph Cornelius on September 2, 1935. Irene was a homemaker and devoted caregiver. She lived for many years in Leawood, Kan., and was active in Girl Scouts and the Cystic Fibrosis Organization. Irene was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed creating intricate works of cross-stitch. After the death of her husband, Irene moved to John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit. She was very active at the Village as a volunteer. Irene loved to spend time with her neighbors playing games and doing puzzles. She was also an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her three children, Patsy, Leroy, and Mary Kathleen; her two sisters, Leona Vaughn and Marion Duer; and a brother, Victor Belt. She is survived by her daughter, Christine Coburn and husband Gary of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; her son, Kirk Cornelius and wife Carolyn, of Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren. The family gives special thanks to the staff of Village Hospice for their love and support during this last year and all of the very special care givers at John Knox Village Care Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at The Chapel at John Knox Village, 400 NW Murray Road, Lee’s Summit. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Organization or John Knox Village Hospice. Irene will be interred at Greenwood Cemetery. She will be greatly missed. | |
